  1. DYNAMIC LANE MERGING FOR SHORT TERM WORK ZONES By Rami C. Harb PhD PE PTOE Essam Radwan PhD PE

  2. Simplified Dynamic Lane Merging • MOT plan used in FL is the Motorist Awareness System (MAS) • Add dynamic lane merging schemes to the regular MAS • 2 forms of dynamic lane merging: • 1-Dynamic Early merge • 2-Dynamic Late merge • Compare Safety and Operations

  3. Simplified Dynamic Lane Merging CONVENTIONAL FL MOT

  4. Simplified Dynamic Lane Merging MODIFIED CONVENTIONAL FL MOT

  5. DLM System Design DLM Components • RTMS : Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors • On-board processor • UHF communication modem • Central communications system • PCMS: Portable Changeable Message Sign RTMS Unit

  6. DLM System Design DLM Components

  7. DLM System Design DLM SETUP

  8. Results Modified MOT Plan Replication in VISSIM

  9. Calibration

  10. MOEs • MOEs • Speed Variance • Deceleration rates • Coefficient of variance • Control Variables • MOT type • Demand Volumes • Vehicle Classification • Compliance rate • MOT Types: • MAS • VSL • Early DLM • Late DLM • EDLM+VSL • LDLM+VSL

  11. Results • Early and late SDLMS performed better in both open and closed lane than all other MOT types for low and medium volume levels (V0500, V1000 and V1500). • V2000 and V2500, VSL was significantly better than SDLMS combinations, respectively.
