Verify any spellings or information you may have doubts about • Take special care when news releases cite polls, studies or surveys. Check the source of the figures for accuracy and possible bias • If you can't confirm the figures and their reliability, don't use • Take for granted that you are doing a rewrite • Watch for self-serving quotations and information • Look for news, and rewrite it. Don't be suckered in to "their focus”

Handling the News Release • If you want a quote from the senator, official, expert, etc. cited, call and talk to them yourself • Don't rely on the canned quote the person probably didn't say at all. • Ask yourself, is there another side? • Did you tailor the rewrite to your audience? • Look for other possible news stories -- local angles, reactions, etc. -- that can be triggered by the release
