  3. PEZ Dispensers About Variations History Candy Variations Original PEZ dispensers had no character heads on them, and were called regulars (upper right). In the 1970’s, three historical themed PEZ dispensers were made. The heads were Betsy Ross, Paul Revere, and Daniel Boone. Those three PEZ dispensers were known as the bicentennial series. That series started the concept of PEZ character heads. Here are some of the most valuable PEZ dispensers ever. 4. PEZ Dispensers About Variations History Candy History PEZ candy was invented in Vienna, Austria in 1927. It was invented by Eduard Haas III, a candy maker. It started as a compressed peppermint candy. The candy got it’s name from the German word for peppermint, Pfefferminz. If you take the P from the beginning, E from the middle, and Z from the end, it spells PEZ. The candy was served in a small tin can, similar to Altoid tins. The first dispensers looked like cigarette lighters, and were known as “Regulars”. The regulars were marketed as “An alternative to smoking”. The dispensers were invented by Oscar Uxa. In 1952, PEZ was brought to America by Eduard Haas. In 1955, heads were placed on the dispensers and sold to children. Santa and Mickey Mouse were the first dispensers sold for kids. Since 1950, over 1,500 dispensers have been created. PEZ vending machines were used in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The first German machines were used in 1954. The machines were introduced in Switzerland and Austria in October of 1956.
