  1. Synthesis Essay By: Karlie Anderson and Ebony Hughes

  2. Essential • You will be given a topic with multiple viewpoints • You will also get a list of sources relating to the topic. These sources can range from visuals to fiction or non-fiction text. • After reading the sources you must include AT LEAST 3 sources into your essay

  3. Essay’s Purpose • You will be tested to see if you can : • Read critically • Comprehend texts • Develop a viewpoint on a given topic • Support a viewpoint on a given topic • Support a viewpoint with suitable support from outside sources • Cite sources

  4. What kinds can you expect? • Two main approaches: 1.) Expository essay: a developed thesis with specific examples from suitable sources. 2.) A presented argument where you choose a position on a topic and you support your argument while pointing out weaknesses in the other viewpoints

  5. It’s all about the time 1.) The first thing you should even think about doing is: -Read all three prompts -Take apart the synthesis prompt -Read each give text -Decide what viewpoint you will defend or challenge 2.) The second thing you should think about is: -Keep track of your time

  6. Here’s a nice timeline • 5 to 6 minutes going over the text • 8 to 10 minutes planning support • 20 minutes writing • 3 to 4 minutes re-reading the essay for all needed requirements • 3 minutes proofreading

  7. Work that prompt baby!!! • You must carefully read and analyze the prompt because doing so shows that you’re carefully reading and searching for key words, phrases and other info. • Plan on spending about 3 minutes reading the introduction and the assignment. (you might wanna highlight important stuffs)

  8. Groovy up the opening paragraph • Be prepared by creating a simple and brief list of major points in the order you want to present them. • When opening up you can stay in control by being specific and clear about your stance on the topic. • Remember to be clear on your viewpoint your introduction is important too

  9. Time to sexy up that body • Plan out the body that you want to be your essay. After all it is your body so be sure to organize your topics in the order you feel they should be best presented. • Lead your body with the point that you feel is the most important to know.And from there continue on with the points you can best defend, or challenge using the given sources.

  10. And folks that concludes: • You should NOT restate things in your conclusion that you said in the body. The conclusion is NOT A SUMMARY. • Instead you should conclude with an idea that is a relevant thought that you want your reader to remember.
