  30. Two-sample t-test • We often want to know whether the means of two populations differ. For example, there are many questions in which we want to compare two categories of some categorical variable (e.g., compare males and females) or two populations receiving different treatments in context of an experiment. • The two-sample t-test is a hypothesis test for answering questions about the mean where the data are collected from two random samples of independent observations, each from an underlying normal distribution.

Paired t-test • Dependent samples (or "paired") t-tests typically consist of a sample of matched pairs of similar units, or one group of units that has been tested twice (a "repeated measures" t-test). A typical example of the repeated measures t-test would be where subjects are tested prior to an intervention program, and the same subjects are tested again after the completion of the intervention program.

  32. ANOVA • Analysis of variance is a method that allows us to compare the mean score of a continuous (or ordinal with many scale points) variable between a number of groups. What ANOVA does is test the null hypothesis that several group means (the mean score of pupils in type A intervention classrooms, type B intervention classrooms and comparison classrooms) are equal in the population. • Alternatively, we could restate null hypothesis as: “The differences among the means are due to sampling error or other random events”.
