Displacive and Reconstructive Growth of Widmanstätten Ferrite

This study by Watson and McDougall (1973) explores the growth of Widmanstätten ferrite at small undercoolings and temperatures above T0. Carbon diffusion is found to be essential for transformation, with diffusion occurring at the transformation interface in a cylindrical manner. The mechanism of growth is displacive, but carbon must partition during the growth process. Strain is minimized through the growth of pairs of plates together.
