  1. Barnardo’s Works uses a mix of mentoring, wage subsidy, and employer partnerships to help young people gain and sustain employment. We aim to work with those furthest away from the labour market. Often those that no other projects will consider supporting into employment.

  2. ‘When I came to Barnardo’s I couldn’t see a way out from my situation. I’d only just stopped using heroin, I was homeless, and I’d done a lot of things I wasn’t proud of.’ ‘Barnardo’s took a chance on me and I nearly blew it so many times. But they kept on supporting me in every way possible.’ ‘I made it. I got kept on by my employer and got my second chance. It’s changed my life in every way possible.’

  3. Young people participating in the programme access: • A two week interactive group induction • 11 weeks comprehensive work experience • 13 weeks of supported, waged employment • Accredited training relevant to the industry • Personal, tailored support developing skills and confidence.

  4. ‘When I came to Barnardo’s I wasn’t really sure what direction I wanted to take with my life. I really enjoyed my placement at the nursery but then I found out I was pregnant and I didn’t know where to go next or what decision to make.’ ‘Barnardo’s supported me into making the right decision for me. They helped me get a place in college and plan my future.’ ‘I passed my college course before my daughter was born and now I’m confident about going back into work.’

  6. ‘Before I came to Barnardo’s I was basically doing nothing. It was hard to stay motivated and no one would give me a chance because I didn’t have good grades or work experience.’ ‘Barnardo’s got me an opportunity to go and be an apprentice with Scottish & Southern Energy and helped me with all the testing.’ ‘I’m totally independent now. It was worth all the hard work. It totally opened by eyes and now I feel like the sky’s the limit.’

Over the last year young people have overcome a variety of obstacles to full-time work. • 65% had little or no work experience • 52% had a criminal record • 48% described themselves as having past dependency on drugs or alcohol • 35% were on the homeless register • 33% are young parents. 84% have entered and sustained employment or training.
