  2. —In the 1400’s, sailors from Europe started to look for new trade routes to the Far East, hoping to get rich. Over the next 300 years, most of the world was visited and mapped by European explorers. This time in history is called the “Age of Exploration,” or the “Age of Discovery.” 1.) Age of Exploration

  3. 2.) Exploration traveling to an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it.

  4. 3.) Settlement —A small community or village built in a new land.

  5. 4.) Circumnavigate —To sail completely around something, such as the globe.

  6. 5.) Caravel —A small, fast sailing ship

  7. 6.) Compass —A tool or instrument for finding directions by first locating north.

  8. 7.) Chronometer a clock that can be used to determine longitude by using the stars ***A huge advancement for sailors in the 17 and 18th centuries

  10. 9.) mercantilism Step 1: Colonies send raw materials back to the mother country Step 2: The raw materials are turned into manufactured goods Step 3: The manufactured goods are sold back to the colonies at a much higher price
