  1. LEAP INFORMATION This year LEAP testing is: March 19, 2013 And April 8 - 11, 2013 This meeting is to give you testing information, and is NOT for conferences!

  2. FOUR PARTS OF LEAP • Language Arts • Math • Science • Social Studies

  3. MANDATORY TO PASS 4th GRADE • Language Arts • Math AVERAGED INTO SCHOOL’S SCORE • Science • Social Studies

  4. LANGUAGE ARTS DESIGN OF LEAP PART 1: READING & RESPONDING (36 points) 4 reading selections *selected from fiction, nonfiction, and poetry * 2 short passages/2 long passages * 20 - Multiple Choice (1 pt. each) * 8 - Short Answer Questions (2 pts. each)

  5. LANGUAGE ARTS DESIGN OF LEAP PART 2: WRITING (12 points) *1 - extended essay response to a writing prompt. Students will read one to two passages, and they are expected to use evidence from the text in essay. PART 3: PROOFREADING (8 points) *1 – Passage where grammar mistakes need corrections.

  6. LANGUAGE ARTS DESIGN OF LEAP PART 4: USING INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES (9 points) *Using a packet of information containing 4 – 6 different types of resource documents: articles, parts of books, visual aids, and computer info. to answer questions. 5 - multiple choice items (1 pt. each) 2 - short answer items (2 pts. each)

  7. MATHEMATICS DESIGN OF LEAP PART A: 60 MULTIPLE CHOICE ITEMS (1 point each) Measures concepts and skills in problem-solving contexts *Calculator can be used for 24 Problems. * No calculator can be used for 36 Problems.

  8. MATHEMATICS DESIGN OF LEAP PART B: 3 Constructed-Response Questions (Each worth 4 points for a total of 12 points) Formats include: Numerical answers Short written responses Charts and graphs Students are required to explain how they arrived at their answers.

  9. SCIENCE DESIGN OF LEAP Formats include: *40 Multiple-choice answers *4 Short-answer questions *1 Science task with manipulative (3- Short Answer items and 1-Extended response item.) Remember, this section is not used for student pass/fail score. This is used to score the school’s performance.

  10. SOCIAL STUDIES DESIGN OF LEAP Formats include: 50 Multiple-choice answers 4 Constructed-response questions or tasks Remember, this section is not used for student pass/fail score. This is used to score the school’s performance.

  11. ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS • ADVANCED • MASTERY • BASIC • APPROACHING BASIC • UNSATISFACTORY

  12. POLICY TO PASS LEAP • Student who scores APPROACHING BASIC in Math MUST score BASIC in Language Arts. • Student who scores APPROACHING BASIC in Language Arts MUST score BASIC in Math.

  13. SCORING COMBINATIONS IN MATH & LANGUAGE ARTS • 2 Advanced scores = PASS • 1 Advanced with a Mastery, Basic, or Approaching Basic scores = PASS • 2 Mastery scores = PASS • 1 Mastery with a Basic or Approaching Basic scores = PASS • 2 Basic scores = PASS • 1 Basic with an Approaching Basic scores = PASS with the option to attend summer school without being retested

SCORING COMBINATIONS IN MATH & LANGUAGE ARTS • 2 Approaching Basics scores = FAILURE with mandatory summer school to be retested in July • 1 Approaching Basic with an Unsatisfactory scores = FAILURE with mandatory summer school to be retested in July • 2 Unsatisfactory scores = FAILURE with mandatory summer school to be retested in July

  16. WHAT IF MY CHILD DOESN’T PASS THE LEAP IN THE SPRING? • Summer school • Retest in July • New score determines if student: • is retained in 4th grade • is placed in a 4T class (Location: Martha Vinyard) • is placed in 5th grade

  17. EXACTLY WHAT IS 4T? • 5th grade curriculum • 4th grade LEAP remediation • Retest LEAP in the spring • Pass 4T and LEAP (with combined score of 1,200) in the spring, student will be placed in 6th grade for the following year. • Pass 4T and fail LEAP in the spring, student will be retested after going to summer school and may be placed in 5th grade.

  18. IMPORTANT TIDBITS • Phase 1 - Testing date is Tuesday, March 19, 2013 • Phase 2 – Testing Dates (Monday through Thursday) April 8 – 11, 2013 • Absences – Doctor’s excuse must be provided to make up any part of the test. • Tardies – Students will not be allowed to enter the test room once testing has begun for the day.
