The Project Make an impact – make a difference – making holly wreaths to sell for Naomi House Run a Charity Fashion Show for Naomi House Make an impact – make a difference – make a scarecrow out of scrap metal to show our work and industry and put her in the community gardens Make an impact – make a difference – gather together lots of recipes to hopefully make a book with a section on Traveller recipes from long ago Make an impact – make a difference – get the teachers to plan lessons to include aspects of our culture and use us as their advisors Make an impact – make a difference – get the local people to allow us to exhibit with them all about the Travellers’ culture in our community Make an impact – make a difference – get 1300 people to join in a community project and make a dress to remember

Racist Language Pikey There is no word more offensive to a Traveller According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first use of the word Pikey in print was in the Times in 1837, referring to strangers who had come to the Isle of Sheppey island to harvest. Later that century it meant a “Turnpike Traveller“, taken from the ‘Turnpike act’ which forbid Travellers to camp on the roadside with severe punishments for those who broke the law. But in more recent years it has become a term of abuse and in the eyes of the law using it can even be deemed a racist offence, given its association with Irish Travellers and Roma Gypsies.

Discussion Time • The following questions may help your discussion. • Discuss your reaction to the story • The two youths who killed Johnny were sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison – Is this right? • What punishment is appropriate for a racially motivated attack? • Why do you think the bullies disliked Johnny so much? • Were there any moments when Johnny’s teachers could have helped? • Did you recognise any of the character’s behaviour or opinions from your own experience? • 5. What can be done to prevent racist bullying in schools?
