Historical Information 40’s – 60’s Followed General US Culture Docs were generalists, and often competitors Ambulance companies were rare and not well trained Workers volunteered to get close to the action Safety Barriers at best were hay bales International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

Historical Information 40’s – 60’s • Changes were Afoot • Drivers were getting concerned about safety (2 examples) • Dr Snively – One of the founders of the Snell Foundation • Dr Talbot – Developed the Tire Barrier System • Fixed facilities were being built • Some medical providers were developing travelling Medical Facilities (Example Dr. Joe Hume in the Midwest) • SCCA was developing licensing standards for its workers International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

  8. Historical Information 70-90’s • Evolution Followed US Culture • Fixed Medical facilities were SCCA Regions developed schools to • being built train corner workers and Emergency Services workers. International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

Historical Information 70-90’s • Evolution Followed US Culture • The EMS trained medics were showing up as volunteers • Doctors were volunteering to cover races, some were actual trauma specialists • Medical groups were Coalescing as “teams” at the tracks International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

  10. 90’s - Present • Evolution Followed US Culture • Medical Volunteers became a rare thing • Tracks took over Medical coverage, generally with paid workers • (and some volunteers) • Most coverage is now done by contract ambulances. • A few tracks still have a mix of volunteers and paid workers • Medical training is assumed to have been done.   15. Corner Workers/Marshalls Each Spring Regions run a training program including a Crash & Burn School New members throughout the year are assimilated via OJT There is a license upgrade process International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

  16. Corner Workers/Marshalls Before each Day: 1. There is a general meeting to cover safety issues 2. Each Corner captain then has a separate meeting for issues pertinent to that specific corner.   18. Stewards – (Safety) Responsible for the overall safety of the event. Coordinates with Medical, Emergency Services and Corner workers. Assesses unsafe conditions and actions. Drivers Should have Drivers School experience before racing Professional schools Schools conducted by SCCA racing regions Concentration is on safety and smoothness License changes as experience increases New drivers are monitored by the stewards for safety and performance International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

  21. Pro Racing Series Generally use the local track ES personnel (remember most track workers have some SCCA association) On Occasion will send a travelling safety team to coordinate with the local personnel International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

  22. Summary SCCA Safety training is ongoing. Much of it has, by circumstance, to be OJT There are good training manuals that higher level licensees are very familiar with International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013

  23. Summary BOTTOM LINE: Most safety workers at tracks are SCCA trained SCCA Events have a very good safety record with a focus on decreasing the number and severity of Injuries annually International Council of Motorsport Sciences Annual Congress Dec 2013
