  3. What does Pepe represent? • Pepe represents Steinbeck as a young man

  4. Analysis: Momma • Needs a man in the house after her husband died. • Thinks Pepe is incapable of becoming a man. • Gets proven wrong by Pepe. • In charge of the house, dominant

  5. What does Momma represent? • Momma represents the “rule” of the house. Everyone obeys and listens to her and she runs the house.

  6. Analysis: Emilio • Pepe’s little brother. • Can’t wait to be man.

  7. What does Emilio represent? • The precocious, little brother who wants to become a man and mature.
