OUR GENESISA Brief History of the GRCF Challenges • Faced with the challenge of sustaining social and related development issues • Pockets of wealth – Platinum – little benefit to local community • Increase of poverty, unempolyment and HIV/AIDS Community decision • GRCF established – public launch 2000 • Established unrestricted endowed fund – 2001 • Office and staff appointed – May 2001 • First NGO/CBO Conference – September 2001 • First grant making event – March 2002
A local (South African) manifestation of a Community Foundation • Independent, private philanthropic institution • Publicly supported • Serves the interest of the public good in a specific geographic area (greater Rustenburg district) • Mobilizing resources and acting as a steward over these resources • Permanent endowed (invested) funds – grant making • Local grant maker – grassroots • Support local NGO’s/CBO’s – capacity development • Tax exempted • Provide donor services • Governed by an independent , reflective, credible, respected, expertise and influential Board of Trustees – local individuals • Managed by a professional Executive together with a small dedicated team

The KING Report – SA - 1994 “Good corporate governance is concerned with managing the balance between the economic and social goals and between individual and communal goals. To stretch this point further, today's corporations should strive to strike the balance between the demands to become globally competitive with its responsibilities to the society in which they function. Business need to actively participate in the policy development process to ensure that private sector interests are taken into consideration and also develop a strong and vibrant local identity and strengthen community linkages”
