  2. Shelving Fiction Read the spine labels and put books in alphabetical order using the call numbers on each book’s spine. KR 9/15/2010

  3. Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by author’s entire last name. KR 9/15/2010

  4. More than one author with the same last name? Then alphabetize by the first name. Example below: Laurie R. King comes before Stephen King because L comes before S in the alphabet. KR 9/15/2010

  5. More than one book by the author? Arrange the books in alphabetical order by the title. Ignore the initial articles such as “a,” “an,” & “the.”Example below: ignore “A” in A Shadow on the Glass, ignore “The” in The Tower on the Rift, and ignore “The” in TheWay Between The Worlds. KR 9/15/2010

  6. Book Series – A collection of books which share common characteristics, that are officially identified as a group. KR 9/15/2010

  7. The entire series is treated as one book title using the series title.Example below: Fire Bird, Fire Rose, Heralds of Valdemar, Last Herard Mage, Owlflight, Sacred Ground KR 9/15/2010

  9. WARNING!! Before shelving a book at the beginning of a shelf check the shelf above to ensure the book is in the correct order. Before shelving a book at the end of a shelf check the shelf below to ensure the book is in the correct order KR 9/15/2010

  10. Daily Shelf Reading You will receive a daily shelf reading assignment KR 9/15/2010

  11. Check your assigned area and make sure it is neat and tidy, with books standing up straight, and spines even along the shelf about 1/2 inch back from the edge. Use bookends as needed. This process is called facing. KR 9/15/2010

  12. Make sure no trash or books are hidden behind the books on the shelf. Books should not be packed tightly on the shelf, but allowed to be easily removed. KR 9/15/2010

  13. Shelf Reading The purpose of shelf-reading is to check the proper order of books on the library shelves. All books are placed on the shelf by call number. KR 9/15/2010

  14. A shelf is “read” like a book… left to right. When you get to the end of the shelf you continue on the shelf below like you would read a paragraph in a book. KR 9/15/2010

  15. When you reach the bottom of the stack you continue on at the top of the next stack just like reaching the end of a page and continuing at the top of the next page. Stack – a vertical group of shelves KR 9/15/2010
