  1. EVALUATING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

  2. WARM-UP #4 EQUATIONS AND EXPRESSIONS What is the difference between Equations and Expressions? Give an example. Translate the following. A number less than 6 is 15. Twice the sum of a number and 5 is 10. A number squared more than twice that same number is 30. Equation has an equal sign. Equation: x+2=5 • Expression does not have equal sign. Expression: x+2 6 – k = 15 2 (a + 5) = 10 2y + y² = 30

  3. WARM-UP #4 EQUATIONS AND EXPRESSIONS Label the following: Variable c. -3x + 4 – m = 15 Coefficient a. Equal b. d. Constant Check the one that apply to the last example: . Equation Expression

  4. Evaluating Expressions Let’s watching the following video about Evaluating Expressions Evaluating Expressions

  5. Now answer the following questions on your notes • How do you evaluate Algebraic expressions? • What does it mean to evaluate an expression? • How do you evaluate 4y²- xn if x = 2, n = 1, and y = 5? • How do you evaluate y/(x²+ 1) if x=2 and y=5? • What does y/x - 2n equal if x = 2, n = 1, and y = 5?

  6. Now answer the following questions on your notes • How do you simplify and evaluate 3 + 2(n + y)²if n=1 and y=5? • How do you substitute numbers into variables to simplify expressions? • What does xy²- x²equal if x = 2 and y = 5? • How do you evaluate (n + y) / (n + x) if x = 2, n = 1, and y = 5?

  7. Evaluating Expressions Let’s watching the following video about Evaluating Expressions with negative numbers evaluating expressions using negative numbers

  8. Now answer the following questions on your notes • How do you evaluate Algebraic expressions with negative numbers in them? • How do you evaluate a²- (b + c) if a = -2, b = -3, and c = -1? • How do you know what order to evaluate an expression? • What does b²- 5b + 11 equal if b = -3?

  9. Now answer the following questions on your notes • How do you square a negative number? • How do you evaluate (b + c) / a + (b + 1)² if a = -2, b = -3, and c = -1? • How do you evaluate and simplify: 3c³ / (b + 3) if b=-3 and c=-1? • What does 2a³- 5b²+ 6c⁴equal if a = -2, b = -3, and c = -1?
