  3. What colleges are looking for… Academically Beyond academics Grades, grades, grades! # of courses completed Level of courses (academic, honors, AP/IB) GPA Test scores Transcript Leadership (proven & potential) Initiative/drive Service Commitment Balance Resilience

When do I apply to college? • Typically, applications are due between October and February of senior year • Each college has its own deadline • Students are informed of admissions decisions as early as October and as late as April of senior year • Students must inform a school as to whether or not they will attend by May 1st of senior year

UC/Cal State Requirements • A-G Requirements • A: History/Social Science • 2 years (3.5 or 4 recommended) • B: English • 4 years • C: Mathematics • 3 years (4 recommended) • D: Lab Science • 2 years (3 or 4 recommended) • E: Language other than English • 2 years (3 or 4 recommended) • F: Visual and Performing Art • 1 year (1 or more recommended) • G: College Prep Elective • 1 year (1 or more recommended)

What is your gpa? • Each school you apply to will recalculate your gpa into an admissions gpa used at that school • UC and Cal State Universities • 10th and 11th grade A-G courses ONLY (cap # of Honors to 8 sem.) • Private Colleges and Universities • 9th, 10th, 11th and 1st semester 12th grade • May or may not use Religion and Elective Courses • Rigor taken into consideration on school by school basis • Out of State Public Colleges and Universities • 9th, 10th, 11th and 1st semester 12th grade • Usually do not look at Religion • Rigor taken into consideration on school by school basis

The University of California • Nine campuses; must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to apply (minimum gpa is not a competitive gpa) • Eligibility requirements • Completion of A-G courses • SAT Reasoning or ACT with writing • Sample Statistics for UCLA, Fall of 2013 • 80,522 freshmen applications; 16,448 admitted • Admit rate 20.42% • 4.4 weighted GPA • Average SAT = 1961; Average ACT = 30
