HISTORY/ BACKGROUND • The Catholic Church in Brunei was formerly under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Miri (then known as the Diocese of Miri-Brunei) but the Youth in Brunei already had their own group/ in their individual Parishes. • The Youth group in each parish held their own activities until the establishment of the Brunei Prefecture in 1995. • The formation of the Brunei Catholic Youth Council (BCYC) began gradually, with the purpose of uniting the youths from the 3 parishes and eventually included the mission station (Temburong).

  4. HISTORY/ BACKGROUND The Brunei Catholic Youth Council (BCYC) was formed in 1996 and Fr. Paul Shie was appointed as the Spiritual Director in 1999. The BCYC coordinates and governs all matters pertaining to the Catholic youth movements within the Vicariate.

HISTORY/ BACKGROUND The aims of the BCYC are to: • Promote friendship and understanding among the youth of the Vicariate. • Strive to achieve a stronger sense of belonging among the Catholic youth, to the faith, as well as to the church. • To create a sense of unity among the Apostolic Vicariate of Brunei Youth; that they are one in the Catholic movement of their nation.

HISTORY/ BACKGROUND The objectives of the BCYC are: • To organize functions/ activities that involve the participation of the youth from all over the Vicariate. • To coordinate or assist in functions/ activities at the Vicariate level which are hosted by one or more of the constituent youth bodies. • To regulate, assist, or develop the structures, activities and well-being of the constituent youth bodies in the Vicariate as well as their governing committees.

  8. Key Events in the History of Youth Ministry GrACE5 – June 2007 Festival of Praise (FOP) • Started 1992 in St. John’s Church, Kuala Belait by then Fr. Cornelius Sim. • The event is now held annually by which each parish takes turn to host it.

Key Events in the History of Youth Ministry • Each FOP theme is in parallel with World Youth Day (WYD) theme. • The purposes of this event are: - to unite the friendships amongst the youths from the 3 parishes. - encourages spiritual activities like praise & worship, taize night, holy hour, Lord’s day, confirmation retreats, general prayer assemblies (GPAs) - to discover their individual talents and creativity through music and performing arts.

Key Events in the History of Youth Ministry Famine • Started in 1992 in the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, Seria and it is held annually ever since (during Lent), going around in the parishes for the venue. • Its purpose is to create awareness of poverty and hunger of the world among the youths of the vicariate. Also exercise the act of abstinence. • Various activities (breakfast sale, movie night, battle of the bands, funfair, house cleaning) were held to raise funds to sponsor children through Singapore World Vision.

Started in 2004 in the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Bandar Seri Begawan and it is held annually ever since. • It aims to bring the kids and youth of the parish (but open to the Vicariate), to experience the fun and adventure of our Catholic faith, through a series of sessions, workshops, competitions and games.

Challenges/Difficulties Encountered • Disunity of the youths/ lack of cooperation & miscommunication within & among parishes/mission station due to cultural differences, language barriers, etc. • Lack of manpower/volunteers to handle & support the youth ministry • Lack of parents’ support & active involvement • Lack of interest & commitment of the youths to serve God & His church

Challenges/Difficulties Encountered • Most of the youths are shy and reluctant to participate in activities. • Lack of interest in the activities being held, hence, low-attendance rate. • Lack of leadership skills, thus, overburdened with tasks handled by them. • Limited freedom to witness & practice the Catholic faith

VISION-MISSION THE VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Church in Brunei Darussalamis a welcoming communitywhich is sustained by committed local leadersand a laity empowered in the Holy Spiritto be living witnesses to Christ's presence.We are a church that continues her work of servicethrough her ministering to all God's people,especially the youth and the unchurchedby promoting & nurturing holiness,discipleship & stewardship. THE MISSION STATEMENT We the Catholic faithful of the Apostolic Vicariatein Brunei Darussalam,embracing our different cultural backgrounds,uphold our Catholic identityfounded on a faith community gathered in worshiparound the Word and the SacramentsEmpowered by the Holy Spirit,we are commissioned to continue the mission of Jesus as active ministers of the churchand stewards of God's gifts,and by living out the Gospel's valuesas we reach out to the members of the society we live in. Under the guidance of our Apostolic Vicarand in the spirit of love and unity,we will become a visible sign of Christ's presencein this country and beyond.

  16. VISION-MISSION Founded on the Vision & Mission of the Vicariate, the current direction of the youth ministry is to attract, sustain, & train for leadership & service, more youths especially, the locals & the working youths.
