  7. City profile 1.A Characteristics of the city: -Population=975,543 (CBS 2011), growth rate =6.12% (national growth rate=1.36%) -Area=82.14Sq. Km(from 2001) 50.67 Sq. Km(until 2001) -Demographic density=118.76 pph ,(national density=1.80pph) -Height above sea level=1350m -HDI=0.710 high -GDP of the city =around $6.5billion -GDP per capita= $2200 CITIES

City profile 1.B Characteristics of the city: We suggest to present some narratives about the city profile, something that might be key in its social, economic, environmental and physical-space profile, that is a strength or weakness, or both. 1.B Characteristics of the city: -The city’s rich history -nearly 2000 years old. -ancient lake basin, with fertile soil and flat terrain, thus formed a society based on agriculture. -Its location between India and China, helped establish Kathmandu as an important trading center over the centuries-From along silk road which linked India and Tibet. -From centuries past, Newar of Kathmandu have conducted trade across the Himalaya and contributed to spreading art styles and Buddhism across Central Asia. Other traditional occupations are farming, metal casting, woodcarving, painting, weaving, and pottery. City’s issues/needs • Fast pace urbanization and increasing no. of migrants • Limited infrastructure and services availability(resulting slum like area in city) • Land and housing speculation • Number, size and scale of housing projects are inadequate.(Government have very few projects , and private developers are business oriented and target upper middle class and higher class only) • Difficult procedure and regulatory rules are causing delays in land and housing supply projects • Despite large no. of renters, renting is a very informal practice and lack security of tenure • Affordable building construction materials and technologies are not popular among owner built houses. • The financial market available is not accessible to the poor city dwellers. Municipality initiatives 4.A Specific actions: • Kirtipur resettlement project: • Developed to resettle 5 communities living in squatter settlement along Bishnumati river. • Total of 44 homes were constructedat Paliphal- 6 in Kirtipur CITIES

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has approved a budget of Rs 50 million for Kilagal’s pilot house pooling project 4.B Specific action: • Kilagal House pooling Project • The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has approved a budget of Rs 50 million for Kilagal’s pilot house pooling project pooling 54 houses(104 families) in locality. • These houses were destroyed by Gorkha earthquake 2015 • Neighborhood lies in the historic core of Kathmandu rich in culture, heritage, art and architecture CITIES

Opportunities • After the incident of Earthquake, city dwellers are more enthusiast about safer building (site condition, technology materials etc.) • House pooling could resolve problem of dislocation of native land owners of the place (Newars) having land area less than 342.25 sq.ft. adopting horizontal division of ownership of property rather than vertical division. This will improve affordability of houses among poor of core areas. • House pooling if executed carefully can retain original architecture of the place. CITIES
