REFRIGERATION THEORY What is Refrigeration? Refrigeration is the process of moving heat energy from a location where it is not wanted to a location where it does not matter.
REFRIGERATION THEORY Heat • Or “heat energy” is the amount or quantity of heat energy something contains. • Measured in BTUs. • A BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the amount of heat needed to change the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. • Ton of Refrigeration = 12,000 BTU/H
REFRIGERATION THEORY Cold There is no such thing as cold There are only different amounts of heat We cannot “generate” cold, We can only “move” heat
REFRIGERATION THEORY Heat will only flow from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. Heat transfer is always from hot to cold
REFRIGERATION THEORY Types of Heat Sensible: When heat energy is transferred from one object to another causing a change in temperature. Latent: When heat energy is transferred from one object to another causing a change of state

BASIC REFRIGERATION Superheat: • Refers to a VAPOR heated above saturation • Subcooling: • Refers to a LIQUID cooled below saturation • Saturation: • When liquid and vapor refrigerant are in the same place at the same time. (100% RH)
