  1. “Phases of Water” Brain pop • Draw a picture of H20 molecules in a gas, liquid, and solid (in that order) • Act it out!

  2. Water Molecules Water is made up of molecules . Water changes state (gas, liquid, solid) when it’s molecules are heated or cooled.

  3. Molecules Water molecules become less dense when heat is added. This happens when water changes from ice to liquid or from liquid to gas. Water molecules become dense when in cold temperatures. This is seen when water turns to ice or changes from a gas to liquid. Add Cold Add Heat

  4. What is happening to the molecules? Turn and Talk. Draw what you think the molecules look like at each stage of the water cycle.

  5. Think-Pair-Share • How does the sun affect the water cycle?

  6. THE WATER CYCLE (Hydrologic Cycle)

  7. TODAY’S OBJECTIVE • At the end of today’s lesson, you should be able to define components of the water cycle. (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, groundwater, transpiration, accumulation)

  8. NATURE’S CYCLES • Earth’s resources move through ecosystems in cycles. • Some of the most important cycles are: -Nitrogen Cycle -Carbon Cycle -Water Cycle • All living things depend on water, carbon and nitrogen to carry out their life processes

  9. THE WATER CYCLE (pg 15) • Water Cycle: The change of water from one state to another and its movement from one place to another on Earth • The changes and movement of water during the water cycle are driven by the sun’s energy

  10. THE WATER CYCLE

  11. THE WATER CYCLE 1 • The main source of water=oceans. Every day, trillions of liters of water evaporate from the ocean

  12. THE WATER CYCLE 2 • Water also evaporates rivers, lakes, and other sources on land. Plants give off water vapor as well (transpiration)

  13. Evaporation • Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into a gas, or water vapor

  14. Transpiration Transpiration is the release of water vapor into the air from a plant’s leaves

  15. THE WATER CYCLE

  16. Condensation Condensation is the change of state from water vapor to liquid.

  17. THE WATER CYCLE 3 • Water vapor cools and condenses into tiny water droplets. Bunches of tiny droplets collect into clouds

  18. THE WATER CYCLE

  19. THE WATER CYCLE 4 • Water from clouds fall back to earth’s surface as precipitation.

  20. Precipitation Precipitation is any type of water that reaches the Earth (rain, snow, sleet, hail)

  21. THE WATER CYCLE

  22. THE WATER CYCLE 5 When water reaches the ground, three things happen to it:

  23. 1. Run-off/Accumulation 1. Water runs down hills over surface (runoff) and collects in oceans, rivers, lakes, streams (accumulation)

  24. 2. Groundwater 2. Water seeps into the ground

  25. 3. Evaporation 3. Water evaporates back into the air

  26. Summary • Water changes from state to state and moves all around the earth in the water cycle and is caused by the sun. The water cycle includes evaporation, precipitation, groundwater, condensation, accumulation, runoff, transpiration.

  27. Homework Due Friday • Water cycle drawing: LABEL and draw the following • Condensation • Evaporation • Groundwater • Accumulation • Runoff • Precipitation • Transpiration

  28. Homework: Due Friday Water Cycle RAFT • R = Role of the writer (character, famous person, inanimate object etc.) • A = Audience (other characters, community members, parents, etc.) • F = Format (letter, action plan, invitation, brochure, poem, song, etc.) • T = Topic (focus/ subject of the product)

  29. RAFT Example

  30. THE WATER CYCLE

  31. EXIT SLIP: NAME THAT PROCESS

  32. Thursday Bell RingerOn which glass will there be more condensation? Why? • Glass temperature: 2C • Air temperature: 30C • Glass temperature: 16C • Air temperature: 30C
