  1. TOP GEAR The Presentation.

  2. What is Top Gear? • Top Gear is a primetime BBC television series about motor vehicles, mainly cars. The show has won several awards including BAFTA’s, multi NTA’s, and emmy awards. The show began in 1977 as a conventional motoring magazine show, the show went on hiatus in 2001 until making a return in 2002. Over time and especially since it’s relaunch the show has developed a quirky humorous style. The programme is estimated to have 350 million viewers worldwide, and 8 million viewers each week in the UK on BBC Two. There have been ten series of the show so far, with series eleven set to start sometime this year. The show was one of the most pirated television shows in the world.

  3. Jeremy Clarkson. • Jeremy Clarkson is one of the presenters on Top Gear, he is the main presenter out of the three and is very outspoken, he has a very unique view on cars, when he reviews a car he can say he loves it, but still wouldn’t buy it because of the price, or because of one little problem. Whenever there is a top gear challenge, he has to win, he hates losing, especially to James May who he calls captain slow. He has also been on many other television shows, including Have I got news for you, QI, Robot Wars, and Never mind the buzz cocks. He has also hosted Clarkson’s car years, and Jeremy Clarkson’s motor world.

  4. Richard Hammond. • Richard Hammond is the second presenter on Top Gear, he has been there since 2002, Richard Hammond tries to be the funny presenter, he is always eager and keen when it comes to Top Gear, his nickname on the show is hamster. He has also presented Brainiac science abuse, and has also appeared in a documentary called Richard Hammond meets Evil Knievel n 2007, the documentary was filmed in summer 2007 and shown on BBC Two on Christmas Eve, Evil Knievel died just months after filming. In 2006 Richard Hammond suffered serious injuries while driving a jet-powered car for Top Gear, he returned to Top Gear just months after.

  5. James May. • James May is the third presenter for Top Gear, he hosted the original top gear in 1999 and started hosting the current format in 2003. James May is the presenter who sometimes doesn’t feel right for the show and doesn’t want to be there. His nickname on the show is Captain Slow, due to his careful driving style, he was however one of very few people to drive the bugatti veyron at it’s top speed of 253.45 mph. He has also been the front man for many top gear challenges, including being one of the first people to drive to the north pole, along with Jeremy Clarkson, and he has also taken part in a race from Italy to London against Jeremy Clarkson, with him in a plane, and Clarkson in a car.He also hosts Oz and James’s big wine adventure with Oz Clarke.

  6. The Stig. • Who is the stig? That’s a question that’s been asked since the show began, he is described as Top Gear’s tame racing driver, he never speaks or removes his helmet on camera and wears white overalls and a white helmet. The stig’s primary functions on the show are to post lap times and train the celebrities for the star in a reasonably priced car feature. The first stig wore black overalls and a black helmet, he was killed off in series three and replaced with the current stig. The other presenters act as if he’s a robot, or an alien, but everyone knows it’s a human, they just can’t figure out who it is, can you?

  7. Star in a reasonably priced car. • The star in a reasonably priced car segment is a recurring segment, meaning that they have a new guest every week. During most programmes a celebrity usually of British fame is interviewed by Jeremy Clarkson. Discussion is normally amusing and focuses on car related matters, then everyone watches the guest’s fastest lap on the top gear track. For the first seven series they used a Suzuki Liana. The fastest time in the Suzuki was 1.46.7 and it was set by Dame Ellen MacArthur, the slowest time was set by Richard Whiteley with 2.06.0. Since series eight they have been using a Chevrolet Lacetti, the fastest time in the Chevrolet was 1.45.9 and was set by Simon Cowell, the slowest time was 2.08.9 and it was set by Jimmy Carr. They also have a Formula 1 board with the fastest time of 1.44.4 set by the stig, behind him is Nigel Mansell with 1.44.6.

  8. Top Gear Challenges. • Every episode of Top Gear has some sort of race or challenge between the three presenters. From the very first episode to the current series. Several challenges they have done include building amphibious cars and driving them across a reservoir, James May was announced the winner as he was the only one to make it across, a second attempt was made in series ten, this time trying to cross the English channel and drive to France, and Jeremy Clarkson won. Other challenges include trying to find the best driving road in the world, a 24 hour endurance race at Silverstone, a race across London in different methods of transport, a race to Oslo with Jeremy Clarkson in a car and James May and Richard Hammond in a boat, a race from Italy to London with Jeremy Clarkson in a Bugatti Veyron, and James May and Richard Hammond in a plane, turning a reliant robin into a space shuttle, turning normal cars into stretch limos and using them to pick up celebrities, and building a kit car in Scotland while the stig raced to Scotland from south London. They have done many more challenges and races as well. Each challenge is very entertaining and funny.

  9. Top Gear Specials. • Several Top Gear specials have been made as well, these specials usually show the three presenters racing across a state or country. • Polar Special. • The Polar Special is one of the most famous of all the top gear specials, it involves Richard Hammond on a dog sled, racing against James May and Jeremy Clarkson in a car in a race from Northern Canada to the north pole. The car won but it was still very interesting because the temperature at some points was up to minus 65 degrees Celsius, the terrain they raced on was some of the toughest in the world a mix of jagged sea ice and mountainous land masses. • USA Special. • Another Top Gear Special was a trip across four US states in southern America, each of the presenters were given $1000 to purchase a car and drive it across four states, from Florida to a post hurricane Katrina New Orleans where they would sell their cars, the episode was very interesting because they had to complete a list of challenges along the way, including finding road kill off the streets to eat for tea, decorating their cars to try and offend the people of Alabama, and doing 0-50-0 without over running the track and crashing into a river of alligators. When they got to New Orleans they decided to give their cars away, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond managed to give their cars away, but James May failed to give away his car.

  10. Botswana Special. • The three presenters were sent to Botswana to buy a car that was not an off-road vehicle and only had two wheel drive, they would then drive across Botswana from the eastern border to the western border arriving in Namibia, they drove a total of 1000 miles, including a drive through the Makgadikgadi pan, and through the Okavango delta. Unlike other challenges this one included a new rule where if any of their cars broke down and couldn’t be repaired, they would have to complete the drive in a Volkswagen beetle. They broke down many times but they managed to complete the drive without having to drive the Volkswagen beetle. All three made it to the Namibian border and Clarkson declared the beetle as the winner, as it never broke down during the trip. The Lancia Beta Coupe used by Clarkson for the Africa challenge
