  5. A Relationship With God is a Blessed Relationship! Matt. 22:37, Jesus said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” Acts 17:27-28, Paul said, “…he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being…” Gen. 1:26-27, “God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” The beginning of a blessed relationship

A Blessed Relationship,Must Be The Right Relationship Right relationship---God dwells in us Wrong relationship---God does not dwell in us God, who is the Holy Spirit, dwells in Christians “Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.” Acts 5:3-4

  7. Indwelling of the SPIRIT “That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us” (2 Tim. 1:14)

Holy Spirit (God), Dwells in Christians 1st Cor. 3:16, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” 1st Cor. 6:19, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 2nd Tim. 1:13-14, “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.”

Apostles Promised Miraculous Powers, Not Christians Today Apostles to be baptized with Holy Spirit John 14:26, “…the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things…” John 15:26, “…when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me…”

Apostles, Baptized w/Holy SpiritNot Christians Today Apostles overwhelmed, clothed with power Luke 24:49, “I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” Acts 2:4, “…they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” The result of the BAPTISM or OUTPOURING of the Spirit on the Apostles was that – They were Given many spiritual gifts Speaking in tongues, Healing, Casting out demons, Speaking God’s inspired word, etc.

Miraculous Gifts, Special Purposes Gave Confirmation,Heb. 2:4, “God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?” Gave Inspiration,Acts 2:4, “…they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Provided Edification,1st Cor. 14:26, “How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.”

Miraculous Gifts, Limited Time Revelation of God’s word is now complete 1st Cor. 13:8-10, “Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” James 1:25, “…whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

  15. What about Acts 2:38? Acts 2:37-38, “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Doesn’t this prove that the Holy Spirit directly and miraculously dwells within Christians as our personal gift today? KEY---What is the “gift of the Holy Spirit”?

GIFT OF THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT • There is a lot of confusion created - because people do not distinguish between. • The HOLY SPIRIT Himself - as the free gift DOREA of God = a gift God gives to EVERY Christian. Acts 2:38 • The GIFTS CHARISMATA which the Holy Spirit Himself GIVES in the N.T. - 1 Cor 12:11; AS HE WILLS

  17. The HOLY SPIRIT Himself - as the free gift DOREA of God = a gift God gives to EVERY Christian. Acts 2:38 • It does NOT imply the POWER to work miracles, and it is NOT necessary, in any passage where the GIFT is referred to, to imply such powers.

  18. 2) The GIFTS CHARISMATA which the Holy Spirit Himself GIVES in the N.T. 1 Cor 12:11; AS HE WILLS That the CHARISMATA are miraculous powers, is proved by Acts 10:44; Rom 12:6; 1 Tim 4:14; 2 Tim 1:6; as well as 1 Cor 12:4, 9,28,30,31.

The “Gift” of Eternal Salvation Acts 2:39,41, (cont.),“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call…Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” Eph. 1:13-14, “…ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our in-heritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

  20. The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit is: • A Gift from God (I and the Father will dwell in you) • A Gift of eternal salvation • A Gift that dwells within us when we have the right relationship with God. What is the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit?

  21. Holy Spirit no importance or value can be found in any religion that is not guided and upheld by the Holy Spirit “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit” (Ps. 51:12) “. . .and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Cor. 3:17)

  22. 3 BIBLICAL WAYS OF “RECEIVING THE SPIRIT” 1. HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM ONLY OCCURRED ONCE IN HISTORY (ACTS 2:4) TODAY THERE IS ONLY “ONE BAPTISM” --WATER (EPH. 4:5; 5:26; ACTS 19:1-5; 10:47, 48) 2. LAYING ON OF THE APOSTLES HANDS (ACTS 8:18; 19:6) NO APOSTLES TODAY 3. THE INDWELLING OUR SUBJECT

  23. THE INDWELLING OF THE SPIRIT IS IT SOMETHING TO BE SHROUDED IN MYSTERY? IS IT SOMETHING THAT MIRACULOUSLY HAPPENS TO SOMEONE? IS IT SOMETHING THAT TAKES CONTROL OVER OUR BODIES? IF OUR LIVES ARE NOT ENVELOPED IN A FLOOD OF EMOTIONS, DOES IT MEAN THAT WE DON’T HAVE THE SPIRIT DWELLING IN US?

  24. COMPARE “. . . For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people’” (2 COR. 6:16) • GOD DWELLS IN US

  25. COMPARE “No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us” (1 JN. 4:12) • GOD DWELLS IN US IS THIS MYSTERIOUS?

  29. COMPARE “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. Same Gift Given by God the Father and God the Son John 4:10,14, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water… whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Rom. 6:23, “…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Eph. 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Teaches Holy Spirit John 14:26, “…the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” The Word John 6:45, “And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.”

  37. Convicts/Convinces Holy Spirit John 16:8,“…when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment…” TODAY the Holy Spirit IN US convinces us through the Word Titus 1:9, “Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.”

  38. New Birth • Holy Spirit • John 3:5, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” • The Holy Spirit helps us understand through the Word what it means to be born again • James 1:18, “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.” • 1 Pet. 1:23, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”

  39. Guides Holy Spirit John 16:13, “…when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…” TODAY the Holy Spirit IN US, GUIDES us through the Word 2 Tim. 3:16-17, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

  40. Washes/Sanctifies/Saves Holy Spirit 1 Cor. 6:11, “…ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” Holy Spirit through the Word saves us Eph. 5:25-26, “…Christ also loved the church and gave him self for it that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word…” John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” James 1:21, “…lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”

  41. Witnesses/Testifies Holy Spirit Rom. 8:16, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God…” The Holy Spirit uses the Word John 5:39, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me…”

Witnesses/Testifies Holy Spirit Rom. 8:16, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God…” For example Holy Spirit says “Saved by the blood” Our Spirit agrees –(Our human spirit) 1Thess 5:23 Holy Spirit says “we need to repent” Our Spirit agrees WE ARE IN HARMONY

  43. Perfects Love Holy Spirit Rom. 5:5, “…the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Holy Spirit through the Word helps us to know what is right and true, what God expects of us 1st John 2:5-6, “…whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”

  44. How Do We Know The Holy Spirit Dwells in Us? By hearing God’s word Rom. 10:17, “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” Gal. 3:2, “Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” Eph. 4:4-6, “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

  45. How Do We Know The Holy Spirit Dwells in Us? By studying God’s word Eph. 3:3-5, “How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit…” 2nd Tim. 2:15,“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

  46. How Do We Know The Holy Spirit Dwells in Us? By obeying God’s word John 8:24, “…if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.” Luke 13:3, “…except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Matt. 10:32, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.” Mark 16:16, “…he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved…” Rev. 2:10, “…be thou faithful unto death…”

RECEIVING THE SPIRIT THROUGH HEARING “This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” (GAL. 3:2) “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (ROM. 10:17) • CANNOT SEPARATE OUR RECEPTION OF THE SPIRIT FROM RECEIVING THE REVEALED WORD OF THE SPIRIT

  48. RECEIVING THE SPIRIT THROUGH OBEDIENCE “And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him” (ACTS 5:32) • CANNOT SEPARATE OUR RECEPTION OF THE SPIRIT FROM ‘OBEYING’ THE REVEALED WORD OF THE SPIRIT

  49. RECEIVING THE SPIRIT WHEN? WE “HEAR” AND “OBEY” GOD SENDS FORTH HIS SPIRIT INTO OUR HEARTS! “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’” GALATIANS 4:6

  50. IS THE SPIRIT IN YOUR HEART? DO YOU HEAR THE WORD OR THE WORLD? WILL YOU OBEY THE WORD OR THE WORLD TODAY? THE SPIRIT PLEADS FOR YOU TO OBEY TODAY! “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (ROM. 8:14)
