  10. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • The Greek word katharos is translated into English as pure or clean. • In Greek it is used to describe water, wine not diluted with water, unblemished animals, grain separated from the chaff, unalloyed metals such as silver and gold, an army with the sickly and cowards eliminated, lineage, language without errors or colloquialisms and the word is used to describe ceremonial and moral purity. • The idea of katharos is that of unblemished, without taint or alloy (William Barclay, Beatitudes, p. 72-82). • With respect to men katharos means clean from guilt or innocent (Acts 18:6; 20:26) or sincere, unfeigned, without guile (Jn. 15:3). • From this definition one author suggests this explanation, "Blessed are those whose motives are absolutely unmixed, whose minds are utterly sincere, who are completely and totally single-minded" (New Testament Words, p. 170).

  11. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • The kingdom of heaven will be made up of those who have a pure resolve to see God. • David asked the searching question, "Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?" (Psa. 24:3). • Many kings in ancient times lived in seclusion and it was a great honor for one to be allowed into the presence of the king and see his face (See, 2 Sam. 14:32; 1 Kings. 10:8; 2 Kings. 25:19; Esther 1:14). • Thus, David pictures the holy throne room and presence of God the greatest monarch and asks how one might be accepted by deity and be privileged to stand in His presence. • Surely, David is not alone in making this inquiry. • Men have pondered and searched to find the answer. • David answers his own question, "He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully" (Psa. 24:4).

  12. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • Jesus provides a simple answer to this question in the sixth beatitude, "Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.“ • The Bible describes the actions of the heart. • With the heart a man thinks (Prov. 23:7; Mt. 9:4), • understands (Mt. 13:15), • reasons (Mk. 2:6), • purposes (Acts 11:23; 2 Cor. 9:7), • believes (Rom. 10:10), • perceives (Jn. 12:40), • speaks out of (Mt. 12:34), • obeys (Rom. 6:17), • loves (Mt. 22:37) and many other similar actions. • These actions indicate that the Bible "heart" is the thinking part of a man, his intellect, affections and will, what we would call the mind of man.

  13. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • Unlike the physical kingdom of Israel in which you could be naturally born and later taught to know the Lord (Jer.31:31f), and yet still be in that kingdom without knowing the Lord, the kingdom of heaven would be entered only by those who first know the Lord and have a pure resolve to see Him.

  14. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • The teaching of Jesus is focused on the principles of the kingdom of heaven. • While these principles are also found to be a part of the law of Moses, ANY law from God will contain these righteous requirements (Rom.8:4). • The kingdom of heaven would have these principles up front, and those entering it would have these characteristics. • Fleshly lineage would not be the key to entering and enjoying the kingdom of heaven. • Spiritual character would be the determining factor. • Let us notice now another spiritual point of emphasis in Jesus’ sermon.

  15. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • THE PURE IN HEART. • Two Points of Emphasis Here: • The quality of the heart. • The heart is where the kingdom will thrive. • These Points Are In Contrast To Earthly Kingdoms: • The quality of heart has nothing to do with earthly kingdoms. • Earthly kingdoms reside in geographical areas outside of it’s subjects.

  16. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • What Is Meant By Pure in Heart? • It is something unmixed. Focused. Those who do not have two masters, two loyalties, two opposing interests. • It is pure as to genuineness. This beatitude was stated in - Psa 24:3-5 • “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.” (KJV)

  17. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • Notice the several elements of the beatitudes. • It is the whole or entire heart devoted to one important thing. Deut 10:12-13 • “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?” (KJV) • This is ALWAYS required, no matter the covenant. Jer 24:7 • “Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.” (NKJ)

  18. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • It is pure as to loyalty - I King 8:61 • "Let your heart therefore be loyal to the LORD our God, to walk in His statutes and keep His commandments, as at this day." (NKJ) • The heart must be “prepared” for loyalty and purity. -2 Chr 12:14 • “And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.” (KJV) • Ezra 7:10 • “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.” (NKJ)

  19. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • How can one make his "heart" pure? • By faith and obedience in the word of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ (Jn. 15:3). • The apostle Peter explained the how God purifies the hearts of those who believe and obey the gospel. • Pertaining to the conversion of the household of Cornelius, Peter said, "God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe . . . purifying their hearts by faith" (See, Acts 15:7-9). • A pure heart is not produced by "faith alone.“ • Peter latter wrote that obedience is part of God's means of making a pure heart. Peter wrote that Christians have "purified (their) souls in obeying the truth through the spirit" (1 Pet. 1:22).

  20. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • James instructs, ""Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded" (Jas. 4:8). • Paul explained that the result or "end" of God's law is to produce love in pure hearts. "Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned" (1 Tim. 1:5). • The pure in heart are pure in thought, word and deed. • The pure in heart are pure in thought by thinking on the right things (Phil. 4:8; Tit. 1:15). • They speak pure and good words. • "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh" (Lk. 6:45).

  21. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • The deeds of the pure in heart are pure. • As an evil heart or evil mind produces evil deeds or actions, a pure heart or mind produces pure deeds. "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7). • The pure in heart are known by their pure words and deeds. • As Jesus explained, "by their fruits ye shall know them" (Mt. 7:16, 20). • Those who are pure in heart continue to purify themselves. "And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure" (1 Jn. 3:3). • The Psalmist asks and answers an important question about keeping pure, "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed {thereto} according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Psa. 119:9-11). • Paul instructs the pure in heart to flee "youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart" (2 Tim. 2:22)

  22. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • The opposite of the pure heart is the double heart. Ps 12:1-2 • “Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases! For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men. They speak idly everyone with his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. (NKJ) • Ps 86:11 • “Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.” (NIV)

  23. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • The evil deeds that men do begin within the heart or mind. • "That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man" (Mk. 7:21-23). • The impure, wicked heart devises wicked things (Prov. 6:18), • is perverse (Prov. 11:20), • full of evil and ready to do evil (Eccl. 9:3; 8:11), • deceitful (Jer. 17:9), • far from God (Isa. 29:13; Mt. 15:8), • not prepared to seek the Lord (2 Chron. 12:14), • darkened (Rom. 1:21),

  24. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • errs (Psa. 95:10), • turns away from God (Deut. 29:18; Jer. 17:5), • impenitent (Rom. 2:5), • unbelieving (Heb. 3:12), • hardened (Eph. 4:18; Ezk. 3:7; Mk. 10:5), • haughty (Prov. 18:12; Jer. 48:29), • covetous (Jer. 22:17; 2 Pet. 2:14), • foolish (Prov. 12:23), • rebellious (Jer. 5:23, stony (Ezk. 36:26; 11:19) • and commits adultery (Mt. 5:28).

  25. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • Thus, an evil heart or evil mind produces evil deeds or actions. • Jesus demands that citizens of the heavenly kingdom be "pure in heart.“ • God commends a pure heart, • "Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart" (Psa. 73:1). • Thus we are to ask - Psa 86:11 • “Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.” (NIV)

  26. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • Matt 6:21-24 • "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” (NKJ)

  27. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • What Jesus said is what we see of those entering and enjoying the kingdom of heaven. Acts 2:46 • “And day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, (ASV) • All Christians must have pureness of hearts. • Col 3:22 • “Bondservant’s, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eye service, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God.” (NKJ)

  28. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”. • 2 Tim 2:22 • “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (NKJ) • Heb 10:22 • “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (NKJ) • 1 Pet 1:22 • “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,” (NKJ)

  29. The Reward of a Pure Heart is – “for they shall see God”. • The reward of seeing God is promised to those who are pure. • While here on earth no man can literally and physically see God (Ex. 33:20; Jn. 1:18; 1 Tim. 6:16). • However, the pure in heart see God by faith (2 Cor. 5:7) as Moses who endured persecution by "seeing Him who is invisible" (Heb. 11:27). • Christians see God through his creation (Rom. 1:19-20). • They see God in his bountiful physical and spiritual provision (Rom. 8:28; Jas. 1:17). • They see God in times of trouble and affliction (Job 42:5-6; Psa. 46:1; 54:7; 2 Cor. 1:3-4).

  30. The Reward of a Pure Heart is – “for they shall see God”. • When Jesus walked upon this earth, those with the discerning eye of faith saw God. • "Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works" (Jn. 14:8-10). • Although God was revealed in Jesus Christ to all men, those whose hearts are impure, filled with selfish pride, will fail to see Jesus as God. • Again, the promise of this beatitude begins now and is ultimately to be fulfilled completely in heaven when we shall see him "face to face."

  31. The Reward of a Pure Heart is – “for they shall see God”. • The faithful, pure in heart, shall see God by sight in the hereafter. • The faithful have always looked forward with joy and anticipation of seeing God. Job clung to this hope in the midst of his misery, "And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God" (Job 19:26). • David sang, "As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness" (Psa. 17:15; 63:2). • In the New Testament, the apostle John admonished Christians to keep themselves pure in order that they might see God. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure" (1 Jn. 3:2-3).

  32. The Reward of a Pure Heart is – “for they shall see God”. • The Hebrew writer likewise urged, • "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Heb. 12:14). • And John reminds us in Revelation of the reward of the victorious faithful – • "and they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads" (Rev. 22:4). • The great moment will arrive. • When Christ comes again.- Heb 9:28 • “so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” (NKJ) • Heb 12:14 • “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:” (NKJ)

  33. The Reward of a Pure Heart is – “for they shall see God”. • I Jn 3:2-3 • “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” (KJV) • Rev 22:3-5 • “And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.” (NKJ) • Seeing the creator will truly be the most awesome experience. Nothing greater. • There are lots of breath-taking sights on this earth, but nothing compares to seeing the creator of the universe in all His glory. • But, this privilege is not for physical Israel. It is for the pure in heart.

  34. In Conclusion • To this end we must FOCUS: • our hearts, • our lives, • our hopes, • our minds. • Set our affections on things above. • Purify our hearts by getting out all of the competing interests. • Him ONLY shall you serve. • Are our hearts in tune? • Loyal? • Ready to see Him?
