  1. The Joy of God in Doing Good Jeremiah 32:39-41

  2. Trusting God to Work Things Together for Good • Trusting God • Difficult circumstances • Important decision-making • It is good to be reminded • Our God is faithful! • Life is hard ... but God is good! • All the time! • Did you know that God rejoices in doing you good?

  3. Jeremiah 32:38-41 38 They shall be My people, and I will be their God; 39 then I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them and their children after them. 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me. 41 Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will assuredly plant them in this land, with all My heart and with all My soul.'

  4. God’s Promise • Was this promised to Israel or to you? • Jeremiah - an “everlasting covenant” that God will make with his people - v. 40 • The “new covenant” described in the previous chapter • Jeremiah 31:31-34 • “I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel. ... I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts... I will forgive their iniquity and I will remember their sins no more”

  5. The New Covenant • The Covenant Jesus sealed with His blood • The Last Supper - 1 Corinthians 11:25 • “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” • The benefits of this covenant reach as far as the blood of Jesus reaches

  6. The Ministry of the “New Covenant” • 2 Corinthians 3:6 • “who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant” • Ephesians 3:6 • “the Gentiles are fellow heirs [with Israel], members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel”

  7. The Ministry of the “New Covenant” • Romans 2:29 • By faith in Christ, through the blood of the covenant, you can be a “true Jew” • Galatians 3:29 • “If you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise”

  8. Three Promises • The Lord God Almighty, The Maker of heaven and earth • I will not turn away from doing good to them • I will rejoice in doing them good • With all my heart and with all my soul

  9. I. God Will Not Turn Away From Doing You GoodJeremiah 32:40 • God will keep on doing good • He doesn't do good to His children sometimes and bad to them other times • He keeps on doing good and He never will stop doing good • When things are going “bad” that does not mean God has stopped doing good! • It means He is shifting things around to get them in place for more good

  10. God will keep on doing good • Romans 8:28 • He “works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose” • Psalm 84:11 • “No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly” • Psalm 119:67, 71 • “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes”

  11. George Mueller • Great man of prayer, built orphanages and inspired the faith of thousands • February 6, 1870, George Mueller's wife, Mary, died of rheumatic fever • They had been married thirty-nine years and four months • He was sixty-four years old • First sermon after the funeral - Psalm 119:68, “You are good, and do good” • The Lord was good, and did good, in giving her to me • The Lord was good, and did good, in so long leaving her to me • The Lord was good and did good, in taking her from me

  12. George Mueller • How he prayed during her illness • “Yes, my Father, the times of my darling wife are in Thy hands. Thou wilt do the very best thing for her and for me, whether life or death. If it may be, raise up yet again my precious wife — Thou art able to do it, though she is so ill; but howsoever Thou dealest with me, only help me to continue to be perfectly satisfied with Thy holy will.” • As he looked back on the way God had answered his prayer he said, • “Everyday I see more and more how great [is] her loss to the orphans. Yet, without an effort, my inmost soul habitually joys in the joy of that loved departed one. Her happiness gives joy to me. My dear daughter and I would not have her back, were it possible to produce it by the turn of the hand. God Himself has done it; we are satisfied with Him.”

  13. God never stops doing good to His covenant people • Genesis 50:20 • If an enemy is temporarily given the upper hand, we can say, “You mean evil against me, but God means it for good” • Romans 8:35-37 • God is sovereign and has promised not to turn away from doing good to His covenant people • So we can know beyond all doubt, “in tribulation and distress and persecution and famine and nakedness and peril and sword”, that “we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us”

  14. II. God Rejoices To Do You Good • The Eagerness of God’s Promises • Jeremiah 32:41 - “I will rejoice in doing them good” • Deuteronomy 30:9 - “The Lord will again take delight in prospering you” • God does not bless us begrudgingly • He does not wait for us to come to Him • He seeks us out, because it is His pleasure to do us good • 2 Chronicles 16:9 - “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show His might in behalf of those whose heart is whole toward Him”

  15. God Pursues Us • God is not waiting for us, He is pursuing us • Literal translation of Psalm 23:6, “Surely goodness and mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life” • God is like a highway patrolman • Pursuing you down the interstate with lights flashing and siren blaring to get you to stop • Not to give you a ticket, but to give you a message so good that it couldn't wait till you get home!

  16. God Loves to Show Mercy • He is not hesitant or tentative in His desires to do good to His people • Exodus 34:6 - “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love” • The contrast is between the slowness of His anger and the outpouring of His love

  17. God Loves to Show Mercy • We go up and down in our joy • Like little geysers that gurgle and sputter and pop erratically • God is like Niagara Falls! • “Surely this can't keep going at this force for year after year after year!” • No, it just keeps surging and crashing century after century!

  18. God delights in the welfare of His servant because it shows His greatness • Psalm 35:27 • “Great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of His servant” • God has overcome every obstacle • Romans 8:1 - But now “there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” • Ephesians 2:7 - He carried our grief and bore our sorrows and triumphed over death “so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus”

  19. God delights in the welfare of His servant because it shows His greatness • God loves to show off His greatness by being a source of strength to build weak people up • Philippians 4:19 - “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus”

  20. God rejoices to take away every pain and sorrow and misery • Isaiah 65:19 - “I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and be glad in My people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress” • Acts 14:22 - For a season on the earth it was necessary that “through many tribulations we enter the kingdom” • There are good reasons for this, and they are reasons for our good • But God will rejoice when the lessons are over and the final exams are passed • When He sees us perfectly whole, with no tears, no pain, no blemish, no disability, no defect, all heaven will break forth into song

  21. III. God Does Good With All His Heart and All His Soul • Jeremiah 32:41 - “I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all My heart and with all My soul” • How do you describe the joy of doing something “with all my heart and with all my soul”? • The Lord delights in you like a bridegroom showing affection to his bride • Isaiah 62:4-5 - “You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My delight is in her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you. ... As the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you”

  22. The Bridegroom with His Bride • Sometimes we joke and say about a marriage, “The honeymoon is over” • We are finite • We can't sustain a honeymoon level of intensity and affection • We can't stay as fit and handsome as we were then • We can't come up with enough new things to keep the relationship that fresh

  23. God is Infinite! • God says His joy over his people is like a bridegroom over a bride • With God the honeymoon never ends! • God is infinite in power and wisdom and creativity and love • God can foresee all the future and He will keep what's good for us and change what isn't • God is infinitely creative to think of new things to do together so that there will be no boredom for all eternity!

  24. Jesus’ Picture of God’s Delight Luke 15:11-20 • The Father rejoices over us with all his heart • Luke 15 two times “there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance” (vv. 7,10) • Then He illustrates what happens in heaven • Story about a father who had a prodigal son who left home and squandered all his inheritance • The son comes to his senses while feeding pigs in a far country, and decides to go home and seek mercy from his father

  25. Jesus’ Picture of God’s Joy Luke 15:11-20 • Jesus shows how the father rejoices “with all his heart” • While the boy is still a long way off the Father sees him and his heart warms with compassion • He doesn't hold back to watch and see what the boy looks like • He bursts out the front door and starts running down the road • The father stops the boy's speech before he can get to the part about coming back as a slave • The father orders the best robe to replace the rags • He calls for a beautiful family ring • He fits him with new shoes • The father gives a great banquet with the best food and music and dancing to celebrate

  26. God’s Joy in Doing Good to Us • This is the message Jesus has for any who will turn home to the Father • The message is as old as the Prophets • Zephaniah 3:17“The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will be quiet in his love; He will exult over you with loud singing” • Almost too good to believe! • When the father calls the musicians to sing at the banquet, it is He himself that leads the singing! • The song has to do with how glad He is that we are there

  27. God’s Joy in Doing Good to Us • Even though we have sinned and marred the glory of God, the blood of Jesus restores the injury we have done to God's glory • When we take refuge in Christ • We appeal for salvation on the basis of Jesus' vindication of the Father's glory • The glory of God becomes the foundation of our appeal

  28. God’s Joy in Doing Good to Us • Even though we have sinned and marred the glory of God, the blood of Jesus restores the injury we have done to God's glory • When we take refuge in Christ • We are hiding in the One who lived and died and rose again to glorify the passion of God for His name and the mercy of God to save

  29. God’s Joy in Doing Good to Us • Hebrews 12:2 “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” • It gives God great joy to save us! • It blesses Him! • It glorifies His beloved name!
