  4. Jan. 13, 1812 Dear Diary, Today when I woke up there was a bunch of snow outside. That means that I do not have to attend Sir Humphrey's* lecture today. He teaches me chemistry. My mother, Margaret, taught me my school work today though. She teaches me everything, except the science things. That’s why I go to Sir Humphrey’s. My father is one of the town’s blacksmiths.   5. Scientific Magazine Faraday makes some more “laws” This week Michael Faraday and his assistant Joseph Henry discovered what they call, “Faraday’s Law of Induction”. This law states that, “The induced electromotive force (EMF) in any closed circuit is equal to the time rate of change of the magnetic flux through the circuit.” Alternatively this means, “That the EMF generated is proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic flux.” The law has to do with Faraday’s studies in electromagnetism. The two scientists say that they discovered this within months of experiments. The experiments consisted of connecting and disconnecting a wire to a battery. This made a transit current (wave of electricity). Faraday had found several other manifestations of electromagnetic induction. For example, he saw transient currents when he quickly slid a bar magnet in and out of a coil of wires, and he generated a steady current by rotating a copper disk near a bar magnet with a sliding electrical lead ("Faraday's disk"). They then came up with the law.

  7. Facts Albert Einstein kept a photograph of Michael Faraday for inspiration, along side of Isaac Newton and James Clerk Maxwell. Invented an early form of what was to become the Bunsen burner.

  8. His Side Job Michael Faraday also had a job as a Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

  9. Worked With Other Scientists Michael Faraday also worked with scientists such as Joseph Henry who contributed in the discovery of Faraday’s Law of Induction.
