  2. What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?FAS • Prenatal exposure to alcohol • Lifelong physically and mentally disabling condition. • Not single birth defect, but a cluster

  3. What causes FAS? • Mother drinks too much during pregnancy. • Children born to women who drink even lightly during pregnancy tend to be smaller. • Alcohol is able to cross the placenta. • Fetus does not receive enough oxygen.

  4. Prevalence of FAS • Every year I in 1000 babies are born with full blown FAS. • Another 50,000 children are born with Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) • 4000 FAS infants born each year in United States.

  5. Characteristics of FAS • Children are mentally retarded and can be hyperactive and irritable. • Have small heads. • Abnormally small, improperly developed brains. • Facial abnormalities • Inhibited growth • Higher incidence of defects of heart and other organs. • Damage is irreversible.

More Information • A woman who consumes one or two alcoholic drinks a day during the first 3 months of pregnancy also significantly increases her chance of having a miscarriage. • The U.S. Surgeon General advises pregnant women and those who are likely to become pregnant to avoid all alcohol consumption. • A pregnant woman should assume that any drug that she takes will find their way into the bloodstream of her developing infant.

Why is FAS Important to Mental Health Providers? • Over 90% of individuals with FAS/FAE have received mental health treatment • 60% of individuals with FAS/FAE over the age of 11 have experienced school disruption • FAS is the leading known cause of mental retardation • Attention problems are a hallmark feature and FAS is often misdiagnosed as ADHD

  9. FAS is a devastating developmental disorder that affects individuals born to women who abuse alcohol during pregnancy. Although it is entirely preventable children continue to be born exposed to high amounts of alcohol. It’s consequences affect the individual, the family, and society and its costs are tremendous, both personally and financially.
