Activities on level crossings in the last years „ Safe across“ • Common action „ Safe across“ of DB AG, German Automobile Association (ADAC) and DVR of 2002 - 2004 • comprehensive press campaign in 8 cities: Berlin, Warendorf, Mainz, Kiel, Halle, Braunschweig, Nürnberg and Frankfurt/M • Production of 1 million Flyers, enlightenment movie concerning correct behavior at level crossings for schools, driving schools, police, border control and others • New learning and testing documents for driving schools in cooperation with DB Deutsche Bahn AG, VS Safety
Activities on level crossings in the last years „ Safe across“ • Aim of the campaign • to sustain the downward trend in accidents at level crossings • Approach of the “sicher drüber” (“crossing safely”) enlightenment campaign • draws attention to the hazards of rail traffic • explains what relevant road signs mean • sets out the correct way to behave Deutsche Bahn AG, VS Safety
Activities on level crossings in the last years • Manual for the level crossings appearance Contains recommendations for the road-lateral safety device of level crossing, • for use by road construction authorities, transport authorities, municipalities, police, Deutsche Bahn AG and other railways, • Seminar „Safety on Level Crossings“ Deutsche Bahn AG, VS Safety
Lane halving, level crossing guard. Activities on level crossings in the last years Pilot project „lane separation“ at half barriers. The project is now running for one year without accidents in Güstrow. A second pilot is planned. • level crossing guard as replacement for failed technical safety device • spare measure for loss of the technical safety device • because of substantially reduced safety level, post safety device is to be used only at short notice. Deutsche Bahn AG, VS Safety
Lane halving, level crossing guard. Future activities on level crossings • Second pilot project „Lane Separation“ at half barriers in Bavaria an in other regions • Seminar „Safety on Level Crossings“ will be continued • Research and Development on a „bend or straighten“ - barrier as replacement for half barriers. Deutsche Bahn AG, VS Safety
Further measures to enhance safety at level crossings • Replacement of level crossings by bridges or tunnels • Installing protection equipment at unprotected level crossings • “Improving Visibility of Level Crossings” pilot project at Rottal • Checking existing protection systems on their suitability for the present-day traffic situation • Involvement in federal/federal state “Traffic Safety At Level Crossings” committee Deutsche Bahn AG, VS Safety
