Purposes of the Summer Academy • Academic program, not a SUMMER CAMP • Develop academic knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary for success in school next year and beyond high school. • Opportunity to experience college life, develop life long friendships, and gain deeper understanding of the Upward Bound mission. • HAVE FUN!!!

  3. Benefits • A head start for next year’s core classes • Up to one full credit of H.S. elective for students who: • Participate full time in SA for entire 6 weeks • Overall GPA of 3.25 in SA courses • Not miss more than 2 days or 12 hours of instruction

SA Classes CORE CLASSES • MATH: Integrated Math II/III, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, and Calculus • SCIENCE: Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, AP Science • ENGLISH: 2nd Year through 4th Year • HISTORY: World History, U.S. History, Government ELECTIVES • Health & Wellness • Senior Prep • Yearbook & Journalism • Drama/Theater • Academic Success & Leadership

UB Student Safety Personal Safety and Awareness Requirements: • Sign in and Sign out of the Dorm • Stay within the campus boundaries • Groups of THREE UB students at all times • Residence Hall Safety • Release only to authorized persons • Earthquake and Fire safety • UNR Drug & Alcohol Policy: ZERO TOLERANCE • No Cell Phone Policy

CELL PHONE POLICY STUDENTS MAY BRING CELL PHONES TO CAMPUS BUT • Must be checked in with office staff/Ms. Bieth every morning and placed in lock box • May not be used from 8 am – 8 pm • Student collect phones at check-out EVERY DAY • Failure to surrender phone will result in loss of privileges!!!

Transportation & Parking • Non-Residential students are responsible for their own transportation everyday—carpooling is encouraged! • Upward Bound is NOT responsible for loss or damage to personal vehicles, parking tickets (UNR or City of Reno), or cost of parking. (Please refer to general rules for greater detail)

Procedures for Violations • If a student violates program rules, or U.S. Department of Education or Institution regulations as outlined in the handbook the Three-Strike Rule will be in effect: • First Offense – WARNING – After Verbal Warning, loss of points based upon the offense • Second Offense – PROBATION(Loss of privileges, activities, and points) – Conference with parents and Director • Third Offense – possible DISMISSAL from Summer Academy and/or Upward Bound program

  12. UB Office Procedures • 48-Hour advanced written notice for ALL appointments • Appointment pick up/drop off/Sign in & out procedures • Items for UB students – Drop Off procedures • Confiscated Items – UB parents must pick up on Fridays • UB Student Messages – must call UB Office 784-4978

Expectations • Students will participate fully throughout the entire Summer Academy (6/19 – 7/29) • Students will arrive on time and attend every class • Students will work cooperatively with all Upward Bound staff and university officials • Students will behave in a responsible manner towards self, fellow participants, and the program

Summer Food ServiceParticipant • Upward Bound participates in the national Summer Food Service Program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. • The USDA determines that due to its participation in SFSP, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. • To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call 800-795-3272 or 202-720-6382 (TTY). Summer Advising--COUNSELORS • During the Summer Academy (SA), UB students will meet with their UB Counselor (Bieth, Overby, and Conlan) a minimum of two times during the six-week period for mandatory advising • Summer Advising gives UB students the opportunity to discuss personal/social issues and/or concerns they encounter during the six-week SA • UB students will receive passes to meet with their UB Counselor. • The information included on the pass for advising includes date, time, and location of advising (usually conducted at the UB office, in Argenta, etc.)

  19. UBSA Schedule-Sunday, June 19th 2 pm until 4 pm-UB Student Check In—Receive Books 4 pm until 5 pm- Rules with Ricky 5 pm until 5:50 pm -Dinner 6 pm until 8 pm -Activities 8:15 until 8:30 pm – Check Out

UBSA Residential Schedule Monday – Friday 7:30 am until 7:45 am –Check-In @ CAIN 203 8 am until 8:50 am -First Period 9 am until 9:50 am -Second Period 10 am until 10:50 am -Third Period 11 am until 11:50 am -Fourth Period 12 pm until 12:50 pm –Lunch 1 pm until 1:50 pm -Elective /Session 1 2pm until 2:50 –Elective/Session 2 3 pm until 4:50 pm -Advising/Personal Time/Tutoring 5 pm until 5:50 pm -Dinner 6 pm until 8 pm –Activities 8:15-8:30pm – Checkout from Argenta Hall *On Fridays, students check-out of Argenta Hall between 3 pm – 5pm

  22. Director’s Message on Family involvement and support • During SA: • Make sure students check in/out as scheduled • Avoid scheduling other activities/appointments during SA classes or activities • Support UB by following guidelines described in the handbook

  23. Important SA Dates • Sun June 19th- Check-in Argenta Hall from 2 – 4 pm • Wed. July 6th – UB Students check in at 7:30 -7:45 am--from Fourth of July weekend. • Thursday, July 28th- Closing Ceremony, Nightingale Hall – TBA • Friday, July 29th – Check-out of Argenta 2pm – 5pm
