INTRODUCTION • The mobile phone is a crucial output of the information technology revolution witnessed by the world in the mid of the 20th century. • Mobile services have become an everyday fact of life that has facilitated the ever-increasing social, commercial and technological needs. • The telecommunications industry is experiencing rapid growth on a global scale. Due to the extensive use of mobile phones, a question was raised of whether there are any implications on human health and environment. • This had led many telecom organizations to adopt environmental management systems to ensure proper & safe environmental performance.

  13. Egyptian Regulations • Two Protocols were issued to regulate the installation of micro and macro sites, approved by 3 ministries : • - Communication & Information Technology • - Environment • - Health

  14. The Government Auditing • The Ministry of Communication (NTRA&NTI) is conducting regular checks on the network sites to assure conformity to the issued regulations. Macro Protocol Issued on August 13, 2000 Micro Protocol Issued on November 15, 2001 • Distance between the antenna and humans must not be less than 0.5 meters. • Antennas cannot be mounted at heights less than 2.5 meters. • Distance between antenna and the human beings not less than 6 meters (main beam), 2 meters (the sides & behind antenna). • Maximum allowed power density is 0.4 mw/cm2.

  15. GSM Service Quality Measures applied in Egypt Criteria Quality Standard • Coverage. 85% of populated areas. • Blocked calls. Less than 2%. • (during busy hours). • Dropped calls. Less than 2%. • (during busy hours). • Quality of voice. Not less than 2.8 for 90% of calls (scale from 1-5).

A Precautionary Approach • Abiding by all international and national recommendations issued in this regard. • Children should be made aware of the proper use of mobiles and babies should not put the handsets antennas in their mouths. • Pregnant ladies should economize on the use of mobiles. • The public should not near the base station antennas within 6 meters in front of the antenna and 2 meters behind it and on both sides . • Mobile phones can affect the functionality of some precise electronic equipment (EMC), therefore they must be switched off in the following cases: • On board airplanes. • In Intensive Care Units. • People using cardiac pacemakers.
