  2. Battle of Midway 1. June 1942, American Navy surprised the Japanese as they were getting ready to attack Midway Island. 2. American forces inflicted terrible damage to the Japanese sinking four aircraft carriers and crippling the fleet. **3. Major victory for the American forces, and turned the tide of the war in the Pacific.

  3. Battle of Guadalcanal 1. August 1942, American troops go on the offensive and began to attack the Japanese. 2. Savage struggle for the Island turned into a six month campaign with the Japanese finally withdrawing. 3. Began the American policy of Island Hopping: jumping from Island to island while defeating the Japanese and getting closer the Japanese homeland.

  6. The Rape of Nanjing 1. December 1937, Japanese troops take Nanjing 2. Japanese believed they were superior and began a murderous campaign to eliminate all those that remained 3. 300,000 Chinese were killed over 6 weeks 4. Japanese established Comfort Women system 5. 20 – 80,000 women were raped and murdered 6. At the end of the war, Tokyo War Crime Trials were held to punish those responsible for Rape of Nanjing Some of these pictures are EXTREMELY Graphic!

  10. The Holocaust is the systematic destruction of Jews and other inferior groups in Nazi Germany. Holocaust means “burnt offering,” and the Holocaust is sometimes called the Shoah which means “complete destruction; ruination.” This is the term that many historians are beginning to adopt when discussing this time period.

  11. How do we get there? 1. Antisemitism had existed for generations, and Hitler used it to his advantage 2. Nazi’s used propaganda to promote and increase Antisemitism 3. “Scapegoat theory” and “The Stab in the Back,” Hitler blamed the Jews for Germanys loss in WWI, Versailles, and econ. failure 4. Lebensraum (living space) was in the East, and so were the majority of the Jews. The Jews were inferior and the Germans were the Aryans (master race)

  13. This is the cover to the most infamous issue of Der Stürmer, the 1934 issue accusing Jews of practicing ritual murder to secure the blood of Christians to use in Jewish religious rituals. The headline reads: Jewish Murder Plan against Gentile Humanity Revealed.

  15. The Einzatsgruppen 1. “Mobile Killing Squads” that operated with the German Army from 1939-1942. 2. Purpose was to round up Jews, collect their property and then dispose of them, or send them to Ghettos (large walled in cities for Jews to be held) 3. These mobile killing squads killed nearly 1.5 million people through rounds ups and then mass shootings. 4. In early 1942, their role changed as the way to kill the Jews changed.

  17. The Meeting 1. January 20, 1942: 15 Top Nazis met to plan the Final Solution to the Jewish Question. 2. Jews would be “relocated” from ghettos to special camps 3. These camps subjected Jews to “elimination through natural causes” (Hard work and starvation) and “special treatment” (firing squad or gassing) 4. The destruction of the Jews had now evolved into a well organized, industrialized killing machine 5. Through the use of Zyklon B (the gas) millions of Jews were killed in gas chambers and their bodies were cremated.

  18. Adolf Eichmann: 1906-1962 Eichmann was the head of the Department of Jewish Affairs from 1941-45. He was responsible for planning and carrying out the Final Solution.
