  3. Date Rape & Abusive Relationship Facts ½ of all married women in the US are physically abused at some time in their marriage. How many of you plan on getting married? 1 in 10 teenagers will be involved in a violent dating relationship before graduating from high school. That’s 3 of you…

  4. A woman is beaten every 10 seconds In our 48 minute class, 288 women are beaten or abused… That’s 8,640 women a DAY! • Domestic violence is the most under-reported crime in the US • Battering/physical abuse often occurs during pregnancy • 10 women a day die at the hands of their husbands or partners

  5. Every 5 minutes a woman is raped. That’s 9 during the course of this class. • 1/3rd of all rapes occur in a woman’s home. • 85% of all rapes are accompanied by violence or the threat of violence.

  6. 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually assaulted or abused before age 18. • Only 7% of sexually assaulted women report rape. This means the actual number of rapes in the US are as high as 2 million a year.

  7. Can an abuser control themselves? • ABC Clip - Teen Violence

  8. Does Society View Females as Abusers?...or just males? • 300,000 to 400,000 men are treated • violently by their wife or girlfriend.  Time for something NOT SO SERIOUS!

  9. Myth or Fact? Someone who was drinking or drunk when sexually assaulted is at least partially to blame. MYTH - Sexual assault survivors are never responsible for the attack, no matter what, no matter how much alcohol was consumed. Responsibility lies with the perpetrator; the survivor is never responsible for the assailant's behavior. Alcohol may increase the risk of sexual assault, and may make someone incapable of giving consent or protecting themselves, but it is not the cause of the assault.

  10. Most victims are raped by someone they know, in a familiar place or during the day. FACT It is estimated that 80-85% of rapists are known to the adult they attack. "Acquaintance rape" by a friend, new acquaintance, or coworker is frequent, particularly among young, single women. Statistics show that 50% of sexual assaults occur in or around a woman's home, 50% during the day.

  11. Women often falsely accuse men of sexual assault or rape (for example, to get back at them, or because they regret or feel guilty about having sex). MYTH Nearly all rapes are truthfully reported, and, in fact, rapes are vastly underreported.

  12. Rapists have psychological problems. MYTH Most assailants are males with no history of mental disorder.

  13. 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys are sexually abused by an adult at some time during childhood. (Most sexual abusers are someone in the family or someone the child knows, not the proverbial stranger with a lollipop.) Families with 4 or more children have higher rates of abuse and neglect. (Especially if their living conditions are crowded or they live in isolated areas)

  14. More than 80 percent of abusers are a parent or someone close to a child. (Child abuse is far more likely to occur in the child's home than in a daycare center) 1 in 13 kids with a parent on drugs is physically abused regularly. (Drug and alcohol abuse in the family makes child abuse about twice as likely.) 1 out of 10 babies born today are born to mothers who are abusing drugs. (Drinking and smoking heavily during pregnancy also endangers the health of unborn children)

  15. Abused children are 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy. As many as two-thirds of the people in treatment for drug abuse reported being abused or neglected as children. 14% of all men in prison in the USA were abused as children. 36% of all women in prison were abused as children.

  16. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds More than five children die every day as a result of child abuse • Approximately 80% of children • that die from abuse are under the • age of 4 About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse
