  2. The Sundial • Measures the time of day using the sun. • Sun casts shadow on the sundial to point at the time • First found in around 1500 B.C.

  3. Water clock • Also known clepsydrae • Possibly oldest time-measuring instrument • Existed in Babylon and Egypt around 16th century B.C. • Most accurate and commonly used timepiece for millennia

  4. Early Mechanical Clock • First built in 14th century • Used in European monasteries • No longer needed to have human strike a bell

  5. Early Astronomical clock • Shows Earth, Sun, moon, stars, and other planets • Shows zodiac signs • Shows moon’s phases • Recently made into watches

  6. Analog Clock • Indicates time using angles • Has 30 degrees between each number • Circular scale of 12 hours • Also can serve as a scale of 60 minutes and 60 seconds, if clock has second hand

  7. Digital Clock • Displays numeric representation • 12 hour notation with AM and PM • Used LCD, LED, VFD displays • Use of analog clock has declined
