  1. Do Now 9/29/08 What was going on in Europe in the late 17th century? What 3 European groups had land claims in North America in 1753?

  2. North America in 1753 Why might it become a problem to have 3 European powers in North America?

  3. France Draws the Line • French begin constructing forts from Lake Erie to the Ohio River • Wanted to stop English fur traders & settlers from crossing Appalachians into French land • Virginians & Pennsylvanians angered by these forts

  4. A Young George Washington • Washington is sent out by VA to order French to abandon forts • They refuse so Washington returns with 150 colonial militiamen • Washington’s surrender creates a virtual state of war in North America!

  5. “A torch lighted in the forests of America set all Europe in conflagration.” • Voltaire

  6. Albany Plan of Union • Meeting called by British in Albany, NY in 1754 • Idea was to have an inter-colonial government to recruit troops and collect taxes • The plan failed but why was this meeting significant?

  7. “Join or Die,” Ben Franklin – First known political cartoon Why did Ben Franklin think it was important for the colonies to unify?

  8. British Victory! • Peace of Paris 1763 • Great Britain acquired both French Canada and Spanish Florida • France gave to Spain its huge western territory, Louisiana, and claims west of the Mississippi River to make up for Spain’s loss of Florida

  9. Effects of the French and Indian War(Also known as the Seven Years’ War)

  10. BRITISH • Territory • Gain most of France’s land • Become dominant power in North America • Politics • Made a new enemy: France • Economics • More land = more money • Psychology • Ended idea of British invincibility

  11. COLONISTS • Territory • Still under British rule (doesn’t really affect them) • Politics • Resent British (fought for them, but what did they get out of it?) • Economics • Under British rule • Psychology • More confidence, military experience

  12. FRENCH • Territory • Lose everything in North America (except a few islands) • Politics • Hate British • Economics • Lost $, fur trading • Psychology • Lose confidence, discouraged

  13. NATIVE AMERICANS • Territory • “Proclamation of 1763”- London govt. prohibited settlement in area past Appalachians • Politics • With Spanish and French gone, have to negotiate solely with British • Economics • After Proclamation, colonists could no longer expand west and use resources • Psychology • Afraid of what might occur in the future
