  1. Southwest Asian Civilizations By: Colton Cogdill

  2. Lydians • Lived in an area northwest of Phoenicia. • The Lydians created the first coin money. • Coin Money led to merchants being able to set prices for goods. • Eventually some people started to shave the edges so the coin was worth less but no one really noticed. When people did notice they made the coins with rigid edges so they could tell is someone shaved it.

  3. Israelites • Abraham was an important religious figure.He believed in monotheism, or the belief in one God. • When famine came to the land of Canaan, many Israelites migrated. • Moses led many enslaved Israelites to revolt against Egyptians. They went along the Red Sea, through the desert, and back towards Canaan. This became known as the Exodus. • The Exodus lasted many years and according to the Bible it was then when God gave Moses the Ten Commandments which were a set of laws.

  4. Phoenicians • Lived on a narrow strip of land that is now the coastal areas of Lebanon. • Phoenicia consisted of city-states such as Byblos, Sidon, Tyre, and Berytus. • The Phoenicians were influenced by the Egyptians and the Babylonian culture. • The Phoenicians are known for their alphabet. It had letters that represented sounds, not ideas. Therefore, it made learning to write easier so that more people could write and read instead of just scribes.

  5. Persians • Cyrus the Great is known for being the most responsible person to build the Persian Empire. • Cyrus became ruler of Anshan and overthrew Medes. He also had a massive standing army. • In less than 20 years, the Persians defeated places from Asia to Pakistan. • After Cambyses’s death, Darius became ruler. He divided it into 20 territories called satrapies. Each satrap had a tribute. Darius used tribute money to build palaces and roads. Darius made couriers carry messages on horseback. He was an organized ruler.

  6. Religions • Jewish- The Jew’s frame of reference for religion is the Torah, or first five books of the Bible. Every year during the Passover, they read the story of Exodus. • Christians- Christians believe in both the New and Old Testament. • Islamic- The Islamic people believe in the Qur’an. In the Qur’an there are many of the same religious figures as in the New Testament. • There are other religions in the world such as the ones in the picture. It shows what percent of people believe in what religion.

  7. Important People • Lydians- Invented coin money. • Abraham- Important religious figure and made a covenant with God. • Moses- Led a group of Israelites on a revolt against the Egyptians on a journey called the Exodus and received the Ten Commandments. • Darius- Became ruler and divided into 20 satrapies. He used couriers to message between the satrapies, and was anorganized ruler. • Cyrus- Most responsible person for the making of the Persian empire. Had a huge standing army. Also over 20 years they conquered lands from Asia to Pakistan.
