  2. Big Brother • One could speculate that Big Brother is a concept invented by the party so people are never sure if they are being watched • “Big Brother is watching you” • Big brother is similar to God in the way he is a higher being to everyone else and demands tobe idolised and worshipped.

  3. The Party • The Party is the government that controls oceania, which is one of three continents/states. • They use propaganda, surveillance and fear to control the citizens, where the lower class citizens are blue collar workers, then slighter higher up are the white collar workers (such as Winston), then the inner party who are the intelectuals who reap the rewards of everyone else’s hard work.

  4. Status Ranks • Inner party- higher class • Outer Party- white collar • Proletarians- blue collar

  5. Ignorance • Ignorance is a pervasive theme associated with the party, as they tell the workers • War is peace • Freedom is slavery • Ignorance is strength • They convince party members that the less they know the stronger it makes them, therefore party members strive to know only what the party wants them to.

  6. The Ministries • The four ministries are • The Ministry of Plenty • The Ministry of Love • The Ministry of peace • The Ministry of truth • Ironically, each Ministries actions contradict their names. For example, the Ministry of Truth actually censors all documents and other media to prevent anything that would have a negative effect on the party from reaching party members eyes, this ties in with their slogan “ignorance is strength” further persuading party members to be as dependent as possible, as opposed to being independent thinkers.
