Periodic table 4

Periodic table 4. Ions P 115. Ions have a Charge. Ion – an atom or group of atoms that have gained or lost electrons and has a negative or positive charge. Sodium (Na) Loses One Electron. Sodium has 1 valence electron. It gives up that electron to form an ion. That ion has a +1 charge.

  1. Periodic table 4 Ions P 115

  2. Ions have a Charge • Ion – an atom or group of atoms that have gained or lost electrons and has a negative or positive charge

  3. Sodium (Na) Loses One Electron • Sodium has 1 valence electron. • It gives up that electron to form an ion. • That ion has a +1 charge. • Why is the charge +1?

  4. Valence and Ions • Atoms “like” to have 8 electrons in their outer shell. It helps make them stable. • Atoms “give up” or “take” the fewest electrons to get them to 8 electrons in their outer shell when forming ions.

  5. Fluorine(F) Gains One Electron • Fluorine has a valence of 7. • To get 8 in its outer shell, it picks up or takes an extra electron to make fluoride. • Fluoride has a charge of -1 • Why does it pick up an electron? • Why is the charge -1?

  6. Cations and Anions • Cation – an ion with a positive charge • Anion – an ion with a negative charge

  7. What Ion would Calcium (Ca) form? • What is calcium’s valence? • What Ion would it form?

  8. What Ion would Iodine(I) Form? • What is Iodine’s valence? • What Ion would Iodine form?
