  3. In picking a topic, you must consider two things. • Interest in topic • Manageable topic

  4. Pick a topic which is . . • -related to your major • related to a certain hobby • related to something you are curious about

  5. Manageable topic • You need to pick a topic which is not overwhelming. • Something you can write about and do a reasonable job in less than 10 pages typed, double spaced.

  6. Narrowing your topic • You are a criminal justice major and may be interested in the FBI. You might even have a dream about working for the FBI.

  7. But writing about the FBI is too much, too broad • So, you begin to narrow the topic • Examples: • How does the FBI use fingerprints to capture criminals • What is the FBI doing to capture serial killers • How is the FBI organized • Why was the FBI first formed

  8. Another example: • You are a music major interested in the history of the Beatles. The history of the Beatles -- too broad More specific: Why did the Beatles break up What is the Beatles most famous song How did the Beatles get together Why are the Beatles still so famous
