  1. An Overview of Virtual Reality in Construction: Tools, Methods and Processes

  2. Index • Introduction • Tools Used in VR Construction • Methods Involved in VR Construction • Processes Involved in VR Construction • Conclusion

  3. Introduction VR is amongst the few tools that can help construction workers experience the planning and design process in an immersive way, bringing a project to life before it is actually built. The following slides provide an overview of the different types of VR tools, methods, and processes that are currently being used in construction and how they are helping to improve the industry.

  4. Tools Used in VR Construction • There are four main types of VR tools used in construction: • computer-aided design (CAD) software • computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software • virtual reality headsets • virtual reality software • CAD and CAM software has been used for many years in the construction industry to help designers and engineers create virtual models of projects before they are built. These programs allow users to make changes to a project in real-time and make it easier to collaborate with others.

  5. VR headsets are devices that are designed to be worn to simulate VR. VR headsets are often used while playing VR games or while viewing VR videos, but they can also be used to view 3D designs and models of construction projects. They usually feature two wide-angle lenses that provide a stereoscopic 3D view of the visuals and come in a range of different styles and designs. VR software is often used to showcase information like designs, simulations, and videos. It enables users to create an interactive environment that can be viewed with a VR headset. You can use this software to create 3D models of construction projects and help viewers to zoom in and out, move around, and explore details from different angles.

  6. Methods Involved in VR Construction • The three methods involved in VR simulations in construction include: • walkthrough • visualizations • simulations • Walkthroughs enable stakeholders to walk virtually through a construction project, facility, or manufactured product. They help workers see and explore 3D models of projects, visualize details of a specific design, examine different features and structures, and determine their feasibility.

  7. Visualizations enable users to create high-quality images and videos of a project before it is built. Visualizations can be created using 3D modeling software and are used to showcase a project design to stakeholders, investors, and other members of the public. VR simulations enable users to virtually experience a specific situation or event in a controlled environment or see how multiple designs will react in different conditions. Construction workers can use VR simulations to prepare for situations like weather changes, traffic situations, and unexpected obstacles that could appear during a project.

  8. Processes Involved in VR Construction • The three main processes constructors use VR for during a project include: • Design • Construction • Operation • Constructors use VR during the design process to create 3D models and visualizations of a project, which can help designers to communicate their plans more effectively. • You can use VR during the construction process to train construction workers in various fields of expertise like electrical work, plumbing, and welding, and also to help workers prepare for potential situations that could arise on a project site. • VR is used during the operation process to help stakeholders, owners, and managers of construction projects monitor project progress and ensure that everything is proceeding as planned.

  9. Conclusion VR has revolutionized the construction industry, making it easier for designers and engineers to create models of projects and enabling construction workers to prepare for real-life situations on the job site. However, while VR has many benefits for construction workers, it’s important to remember that it is not a replacement for real-world training. Instead, VR is a helpful tool that can improve the efficiency of construction projects and make the process more enjoyable for all involved.
