Causes of February Revolution What are the basic Social, Political, Economic & in this case Military factors that contributed to the February Revolution?
Historiography SOVIET VIEW • The fall of Tsarism was part of inevitable change • It would have happened with or without the war N.B. Written during Soviet dictatorship, little access to archives though many were serious historians. LIBERAL VIEW • Tsarism was vulnerable before war (long term factors) • War was just final straw • Bolsheviks not seen as hugely important N.B. Relied on memoirs, no access to archives.
Historiography REVISIONISTS • Challenge traditional views • WWI made revolutionary feeling increasingly political • Feb was unorganised & chaotic N.B. Revisionists argue amongst themselves POST GLASNOST • Critical of Communism • More sympathetic to Nicholas II • Russian writers after the fall of Communism in 1990 • Sometimes go over the top!
To what extent was the collapse of Tsarist autocracy by February 1917 due to social and economic, rather than military, factors? Economic: Figes ‘Born in the bread queues’ Political: Smith ‘collapse of popular support in the govt.’ Social: Service, ‘Nicholas II…it was the general situation and not his personality that enfeebled the regime…’ Military: Acton, ‘…not the workers movement but the soldiers’ mutiny’
Your argument…. Focus: social & economic rather than military SO……. Because, because, because, because……
Figes agues that the February Revolution was ‘born in the bread queues’. • Explain what he means by this • EVIDENCE that economic problems were a cause of the Feb Rev. SOLID FACTS, NOT WAFFLE! • What does this evidence mean? In what way does it show that economic factors were a cause of Feb Rev? • However, does anyone disagree with Figes argument? • Why do they disagree? • Is there any evidence to suggest that economic factors were not the most important cause? • Explain why the evidence suggest that. • What does your essay believe/argue? • Why does your essay believe this?
