On July 17, 1918, the Romanovs were executed without trial, raising questions about their remains decades later. Diamonds sewn into clothing made identification difficult, and rumors of survival abounded. Following the 1991 discovery of their grave, genetic testing led to the identification of many members of the family. In 2007, a secondary grave revealed two additional skeletons, identified as Alexei and one of his sisters. This case highlights the role of forensic science in historical identification and the complexities involved in confirming identities from the past.

Identifying The Romanovs Your task is to conclude who was missing from the grave.
Conclusion In 1991 Russian genetic testing of the discovered remains allowed for the identification, by using samples from the nearest living relatives (Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, being one). In 2007 a second grave was discovered a ‘short’ way from the original, containing two skeletons, tests were carried out and results published in association with Russian and American labs that resulted in the identification of the two as Alexi and ‘a sister’.
