Criminal Intent. Criminal laws generally punish only those who have criminal intent, a guilty mind, the so called mens rea. Criminal Intent usually falls into these 4 categories. 1. Specific Intent 2. General Intent 3. Criminal Negligence 4. Strict Liability. Specific intent.

  1. Criminal Intent Criminal laws generally punish only those who have criminal intent, a guilty mind, the so called mensrea

  2. Criminal Intent usually falls into these 4 categories • 1. Specific Intent • 2. General Intent • 3. Criminal Negligence • 4. Strict Liability

  3. Specific intent Easiest to define, it means the person intended just the result that happened. The person did it on pourpose.

  4. General Intent • This means that the person either knew the result would occur or consciously disregarded the extreme likelihood that it would happen

  5. Criminal Negligence • This means that a person does some act unintentionally but with extreme lack of care.

  6. Strict Liability • This means no mental state is required at all. Anyone doing the act is guilty regardless of intent. (running a red light)
