  2. Linking Verbs • Linking Verb- a verb that connects the subject of a sentence with a noun or an adjective in the predicate part of sentence.

  3. Common Linking Verbs • Be • Is, are, am • Was, were • Become • Seem • Appear • Look • Grow (in the sense of growing taller, not growing flowers) • Turn • Taste • Feel • Smell • Sound

  4. Examples • Matt Thomas was the director. • He is a giant. • The family grows stronger in their relationship. • The flower smells great.

  5. Predicate Noun • A noun that follows a linking verb. • It tells what the subject is. • The set designer was a carpenter. • Africa is a continent.

  6. Predicate Adjectives • An adjective that follows a linking verb. • It describes the subject by telling what it is like. • He is kind. • Africa is scenic. • The flower smells good. • The boy seems tired. • The athlete appears tired and sore.

  7. Be Careful Linking verb: if it connects the subject with a noun or an adjective. Action verb- if it tells what the subject does.

  8. Tell me if it is a linking verb or and action verb • The bodybuilder is very strong. • They search for gold. • Students seem smart. • He is swimming in the pool. • I have a dog at home. • We will move in the right direction.
