  3. Procrastination • What • Voluntary delay starting on an important task • Intention is to complete task • Knowledge that delay will create consequences Symptom: Poor time management Everyone procrastinates; not everyone is a procrastinator

  4. Procrastination • Why • Emotions (anxiety, self-doubt, discomfort…) • Levels • Perceptual – natural sensitivity for tension • Conceptual – thoughts can trigger tensions • Styles: decision-making or deadline

  5. Benefits? • Relief • You will get something done some day • Finishing a task just in time • Securing an extension on a task • Study on college student procrastination and stress level, academic performance and general health • Initial benefits =lower stress levels • In the end, lower grades, higher amounts of stress and illness

  7. Procrastination • Identify • Self-Check • What tasks am I currently putting off? • What tasks have I put off doing in the past?

  8. Procrastination • Identify • Self-Check • What’s the pattern? Are there certain types of tasks I avoid doing until the last minute? • How do I know when I’m procrastinating? Do I have a favorite replacement activity(ies)? • What emotions can I identify with these tasks that I tend to delay?

  10. Procrastination • Take Action • Learn how to manage tension/stress • Identify when you’re procrastinating • Reflect on what’s really going on • Chunk tasks down • Break task down into smaller parts that aren’t as intimidating
