  1. The Dust Bowl Stewart Fussell & Jessica McClellan

  2. Where Did the Dust Bowl Occur? • Great Plains: • South East Colorado • South West Kansas • Oklahoma Panhandle • Texas

  3. When Did the Dust Bowl Occur? • Past Event • Occurred in the 1930’s • Lasted for a decade

  4. What Part of the Environment was Effected? • 100 million acres of farmland was lost • Most of the topsoil was gone due to winds that reached up to 60mph • (Dust was EVERYWHERE!)

  5. How was the Environment Effected? • The Dust Bowl was a massive drought that caused crops to be damaged and unable to grow due to; lack of rain fall, the hot climate, and intense winds. • All of these factors combined created dangerous dust storms. • These storms also contributed to the majority of the land’s topsoil being blown away, making farming even more difficult. • Also insects destroyed crops and limited agriculture.

  6. Are There Two Sides to This Issue? • It is definitely possible that there are two sides to this devastating event in U.S. history. • Some people believe that the drought was brought about by nature and the Dust Bowl was totally unavoidable. • On the other hand, there is sufficient evidence that proves that the over use of land in the Great Plains during the agriculture rush was a contributing factor. • In reality, the frenzy of farming that caused erosion and removed topsoil and the unfortunate timing of nature were both the causes of the Dust Bowl.

  7. What was the Outcome of this Issue? • Many people were forced to move from their homes because they could not continue to make a living during the drought. • The government had to supply relief programs for people in these areas. • Our country learned better ways to handle future situations similar to the Dust Bowl. • Farmers were encouraged to use farming methods that would result in less erosion such as contour plowing. • Farmers began making use of ground water and aquifers to supplement the lack of precipitation.

  8. Interesting Facts • Men avoiding shaking hands at this time because the static in the air could give you a shock that felt like electrocution! • A newspaper reporter gave the Dust Bowl it’s name. • The Dust Bowl caused the jack rabbit and grass hopper population to explode. • One giant dust storm actually reached the east coat and the Atlantic Ocean!
