  2. Annotation noun • A critical or explanatory note. • My friend heavily annotated the printed directions for me, because otherwise he knew I’d get lost.

  3. Appellation noun • A name, title, or designation • Among my Mom’s many cousins, several of them had odd appellations: “Giggi” and “Sissy” come to mind.

  4. Eponym noun • A person whose name is, or is thought to be, the source of something • The Norse god Thor is the eponym of Thursday. • Weezer has realeased several eponymous albums.

  5. Linguistics noun • The study of the nature, structure, and variation of language • Linguists are quick to point out that romance languages like Spanish and Italian have many features in common.

  6. Malapropism noun • Ridiculous use of a word, especially by confusing it with one of a similar sound. • My attempts to speak Spanish have resulted in a number of malapropisms, like when I described myself as ‘pregnant’ instead of ‘embarrassed’—which made me even more embarrassed.

  7. Neologism noun • A new word, expression, or usage • Usually, neologisms don’t bother me that much, but it makes me cringe when somebody describes himself as a “foodie”.

  8. Parlance noun • A particular manner of speaking • The contract was written in legal parlancethat was so complex that neither side knew what it was signing.

  9. Patois noun • A regional dialect, especially a nonstandard one that has no written tradition. • The Cockney patois of London includes colorful expressions such as we’re in Barney (trouble)

  10. Polyglot • A) adj. Using several languages • B) noun A person who speaks several languages
