  1. Youth Leadership, Sustainability and Ethics Presented by: Saudia Sadloo November 15, 2011.

  2. a challenge in my community • Solid Waste Management (Dumping Garbage) Topic: To minimize solid waste management in the community of Campbellville, Georgetown, Guyana.

  3. Background The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun outreach programmes dealing with waste management in Guyana. Apart from the work done by the EPA there is need for collaboration with different Ministries in Guyana such as the Ministry of Education, Mayor and City Council (M&CC)- Georgetown, Regional and Neighbourhood Democratic Council (RDC & NDC) to facilitate MORE PROACTVE Education and Awareness programs to curb this problem. Finance is also one of the reasons a lot of workshops are minimized and the literacy rate in the country Guyana. Aside from all the above mentioned factors the attitudes of individuals in society is another problem that contributes to this problem. However, the Agency is in process of helping schools to form environmental clubs within the country, in different regions while there are some existing clubs and group but they are not active.

  4. theEarth Charter principle(s) • Principle #1 Respect and care for the community of life • Principle #3 Ecological Integrity • Principle # 4 Democracy, Nonviolence, and Peace

  5. Targets Networks or organizations • The Ministry of Education • Youth Group Ministries and churches across Guyana • The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) • Regional or Neighbourhood Democratic Council (RDC & NDC • All Primary and Secondary Schools and tertiary institutions • All economic sectors release waste into the environment on a daily basis.

  6. Objectives • To create Environmental Groups through the church or in the Campbellville community affected by waste management. • To create signs to be placed on the reserve such as No dumping of Garbage or Do not Dump, if caught you will be prosecuted.

  7. Methodologyor what you are going to do and/or what you would like to do about it ! COMMUNITY LEVEL • To solving solid waste problems the community can form an environmental group or the church can be asked to form an environmental group. • With approval for the community, members from the community ill be chosen to represent the community and in the case of the church, the Bishop will ask that members who are interested in participating in the group to join. • Once the groups are formed. The task is to create signs and bins to facilitate the collection of waste. The private sector would also be asked for donations of signs and bins e.g. Banks D.I.H, Distilleries and other local business. Fundraising within the church diocese and community can be achieved by hosting food sales, etc.

  8. Cont’d • Generally simple practices as separation of waste (non-biodegradable and biodegradable)at home, work etc. and making it a part of our everyday lives and a habit. • Also copying good habits to getting our waste out of the street and to the appropriate landfill in order to achieve development. • All the relevant Agencies such as NDC, RDC, M&CC will be informed via formal letters of our project and the support required by them on a community level in terms of enforcement and monitoring.

  9. limitation • This project proposal with a time frame of six months however, during this period certain procedures may or may not be approved. The time line stipulated for the project will require a longer period. • Generally the collection and transportation of waste to the landfill site on a regular basis from the community to the landfill site and to avoid dumping of garbage in the vicinity of the school and the church (the community) may be a challenge monitor to for the group and the City Council. • If any persons or organizations are caught littering or dumping waste on the reserve even though there is a sign, the possibility exists that they may not be prosecuted due to no monitoring of police. Additionally, the enforcement of the legislation ( this will also be no lawyer to represent the community if such matters arise in the court).
