Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  5. Major Applications • Washing Machines • Air Compressors • Air Conditioning Units • Pumps • Electric Cars • Industrial Machines ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  6. Basic Operating Principle – 3-Phase Power • In a three-phase system, three circuit conductors carry three alternating currents (of the same frequency) which reach their instantaneous peak values at different times. Taking one conductor as the reference, the other two currents are delayed in time by one-third and two-thirds of one cycle of the electrical current. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  7. Basic Operating Principle • A 3-phase motor consists of three windings at 120 degree intervals around the casing with a permanent magnet in the center. • Each winding is connected to a separate phase of the 3-phase power. • The three-phase power produces a magnetic field that rotates in a specified direction, which causes the permanent magnet to rotate. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  8. Basic Operating Principle (Cont.) • As the magnet rotates, the windings “take turns” repelling it toward the next winding. Due to the 3-phase power, only one winding can be at full voltage at a time. The other two windings have equal but opposite voltages. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  9. Typical Control Configuration ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. Sample Configuration/Application • Tesla Roadster • 375 Volt Air-Cooled AC Induction Motor • 248 HP @ 5000-8000 RPM • 92% Average Efficiency • 276 ft/lb Torque @ 0-4500 RPM ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Sample Configuration/Application (Cont.) • The motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries combined with a power inverter that converts DC power to 3-phase AC power using insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). • The motor is positioned between the two rear wheels. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Major Specifications (Typical) • Voltage: 100-240 Volts AC • Power: 50-2,200 Watts • Speed: 0-20,000 RPM ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. Advantages/Limitations • High reliability (no brush wear), even at high speed • High efficiency at high speed • Driven by multi-phase inverter controllers • Use with DC power requires costly DC/AC conversion • Higher cost than single-phase motor ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Selection Options • There are many factors that must be considered when selecting a motor. Some of these are: • Horsepower • Torque • Size • Power Factor • Efficiency • Required RPMs ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. Selection Options (Cont.) • General Electric has a checklist for selecting large AC motors. This checklist can be found at: http://www.geindustrial.com/publibrary/checkout/Catalogs%20and%20Buyers%20Guides|motorlist|PDF ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. Sample Pricing Guide • There are many companies that offer guides with a vast range of motors and prices. Below is an example of such a guide from General Electric. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
