  1. R.E. Stevenson Elementary Student/Parent Handbook 2011-2012

  2. Fees/Visitors (page 1) • $17.50 • All visitors shall report immediately to the receptionist upon entering the school and receive a visitor’s badge.

  3. Textbooks (page 2) • Any textbooks that are damaged or lost will be paid for by the parents.

  4. Food Policy (page 2) • Parents are invited to join their child for breakfast and/or lunch. • Visitors to our cafeteria are not permitted to bring commercially prepared foods into the school building. • No canned soft drinks are permitted in the cafeteria.

  5. Buses (page 3) • Bus and car rider change requests must be made in writing or with a visit to the school from the parent of legal guardian of the child no later than 12:00 p.m. of the day the change it to take effect. • No changes will be accepted over the phone. • Riding the bus is a privilege and is determined by the student’s behavior. Good behavior is expected at all times.

  6. Medication (page 4) • All medicine will be left with the school nurse by a parent or guardian. • An emergency procedure card is maintained on each child listing whom to notify in case of sickness or accident. • Students will be sent home only after a nurse referral for the reasons of fever, persistent bleeding, broken bones, vomiting, or other contagious conditions.

  7. School Parties(page 4-5) • All snacks or food items provided for parties/celebrations must be pre-wrapped or prepared by a licensed food handler. • Home-made or opened food items cannot be accepted. • Gift exchange (friend to friend) and party invitations must be done outside of school if the whole class is not included.

  8. Library Media Center (page 5) • Everyone may use the Library Media Center. • All materials, equipment, facilities, and proper behavior will maintained so that maximum learning can occur. • All library materials must be turned back into the library at the closure of the year.

  9. Rational and Philosophical Statement (page 6) • The Russellville Independent School System has been mandated by the public to improve student achievement, and in order to accomplish this goal, students are expected to do their homework, turn in assignments as directed and be responsible to each teacher for the subjects involved.

  10. Code of Conduct (page 6-7) • Students will be responsible for this code in school, at school-sponsored or related activities, and on school buses. • The best discipline is self-discipline. • If each student will discipline himself/herself by showing respect and common courtesy to all citizen of the school, there will be few occasions that a further measure of discipline on the part of the staff will be necessary.

  11. Code of Conduct(page 6-7) cont. • STEVENSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS A BULLY FREE BUILDING • Anyone disobeying this policy will be sent to the office where their parent will be notified of the incident and discipline. • Stevenson adheres to a strict 3 strike policy.

  13. Behavior and Discipline (page 10) • The Russellville Independent Board of Education requires high standards of personal conduct from each student to promote respect for the rights of others and to accomplish the purpose of the schools.

Behavior and Discipline (page 10) Compliance with the standards is necessary to provide • Orderly operation of the schools • A safe environment for student, district employees, and visitors to the schools. • Opportunities for students to achieve at a high academic level in productive learning environment • Assistance for students at risk of failure or of engaging in disruptive behavior • Regular attendance of the students • Protection of property

  15. Responsibility(page 10) Students have the responsibility to: • IMMEDIATELY report serious offenses and students who threaten to harm other students, a teacher, counselor, or school administrator. • Give their best effort to tasks assigned by their teacher, coach or other person who works with them. • Discuss concerns with guidance counselor or other school officials.

  16. Required standards(page 10-12) • Good attendance is necessary to satisfactory process and high academic achievement. • Students shall exercise self-control as required by a particular situation and in keeping with school and district rules or be subject to removal from the regular classroom setting or transportation system. • School property belongs to the community and the state. It must be protected and preserved for education and community use. Therefore, students shall respect school property and the property of others.

  20. Miscellaneous acts of misconduct(page 16) • Care of school and personal property • Chewing gum • Cell phone rule • All violations will result in the device being confiscated and the parent must pick it up from school.

  21. Dress code policy(page 16-17) • Pants must not sag below the waist. Belt must be worn if needed.

  22. Dress code policy(page 16-17) 2. Skirts blouses, and dresses must completely cover the abdomen, back and shoulders. No sleeveless shirts. Shirts or tops must cover the waistband of pants, shorts or skirts with no midriff visible. All student shorts must adhere for (4) inches above the knee.

  23. Dress code policy(page 16-17) 3. Head apparel, except for religious or medical reasons, must not be worn inside the school building except on designated days.

  24. Dress code policy(page 16-17) 4. Footwear is required and must be safe, correctly sized and appropriate for indoor or outdoor physical activity. Flip-flops are strongly discouraged. No house shoes.

  25. Dress code policy(page 16-17) 5. Clothing or accessories may not display offensive, vulgar language or images and must not advertise products which students may not legally purchase.

  27. Dress code policy(page 16-17) First Offence Teacher will remove article, send student to office, or will contact parent(s) for a change of clothes. Parent will be notified and infraction will be documented.

Friday school(page 21) • Friday school is designated to hold repeat offenders in grades 3-6 accountable for their continued incomplete work or inappropriate behavior. • Once students have attended Friday school four times the KYCID Behavior Committee will meet with the parents and the student to decide on the next necessary action.

Immediate office referral(page 21) • Fighting (any direct or indirect aggressive touching) • Slanderous remarks (foul language, fighting words) • Stealing • Destroying property • Disobedience (informing the teacher that he or she will not comply with adult instruction) • Leaving school grounds without permission
