The project aims to amalgamate point data with environmental parameters to predict species composition changes based on climate scenarios. Challenges include data access issues and communication problems with partners. Deliverables include AquaMaps with 4141 species, workshops, and financial status updates. The project is scheduled for completion by September 2007 with knowledge transfer and final reporting to follow. Considerations for data quality, expert review, and server capacity are crucial.

WP3 Biomapping status quo WP3: NRM, CDF, CEFAS, DINARA, WCS
Objectives • Provide access to point data from alla available sources • Combine point data with environmental parameters to establish niche preferred niches and create maps (mostly done by WP1) • Establish a system where maps can be verified by experts • Provide authoritative species inventories • Predict changes in species composition based on climate change scenarios
Dependencies • Maps are provided by WP1 (D1.4) • Underlying data from FishBase (OBIS, GBIF)
Followup on STCM 2 • Progress. • Well…. • Publications. • Still in pipeline • Issues. Communication problems with CDF and WCS • Remain (solution?: more travel for CDF and WCS) • Agreement: More point data. • Some provided from FB-Sweden. With current access to GBIF+OBIS, difficult to excel
Maps = AquaMaps • www.aquamaps.org • Based on c-squares mapping tool (Tony Rees) • Maps available through FishBase servers
AquaMaps • 4141 spp. to date
AquaMaps • Multiple user options
Before-after maps • Snapshot (outdated)
Milestones • First workshop (review data body and assign tasks) - Month 5 • Kiel, October 2005 and Campinas, April 2006 • Second workshop (review map tools, and outcomes of analyses, decisions on dissemination and interfaces) - Month 27 • La Paz, March 2007
Financial status • Current • Salaries: slight deficit • Coordinator travel: too much • WP workshops: maybe even break • FishBase Sweden co-sponsors ArcView, computers, books, travel, etc. • Prediction for year 2 end (April 2007) • NRM 2007 book-keeping will be available for analysis only end March (presently stands at EUR -50 000 ...)
Wrap up • All deliverables must be available in some advanced format by September 2007 • Knowledge transfer within NRM from November/December 2007 • Final report work starts January 2008, together with NRM project management officer • No staff from March 2008 • Audition starts March/April 2008 (? what to do if budget not balanced)
For further consideration • Occurrence data quality • Expert review • Data cleaning • More multi-species queries • Computing requirements • Processing of multi-species data • Server capacity
