  2. What is a Transit of Venus • A Transit of Venus is when Venus passes between the Earth and the sun and it is visible in most areas of the Earth. • Unfortunately, in some parts of Africa and Brazil the 2012 transit was not seen because it was night time.

Guillaume Le Gentil Fact file His journey to find the Transit of Venus • Born: September 12 1725 • Died: October 22 1792 • Nationality: France • Language spoken: French • Guillaume wanted to go to Pondicherry in India to see the transit in 1761 but there was a war on. So he waited 8 years for the next transit in 1769. He wanted to go to Manila in the Philippines but the government said he had to go to Pondicherry. When he got there it was horrible weather, then he heard that Manila had perfect weather to see the transit.

Captain Cook and Green stayed in their fort until the day came of the Transit of Venus. On the day they drew pictures of the transit.

CONTACTS • There are four contacts on the transit of Venus. • The first contact is when you can not see Venus against the sun. • The second contact is when Venus has only just touched the sun. • The third contact is when Venus is at the other side of the sun. • So the forth contact is when you can not see Venus against the sun.
